CBC News (Canada) 23/6/2026 News When Cohort Differences Are Racialized: Examining Perceptions of Law Enforcement Performance Among Black and White Youth, 2000–2019 Objectives: The study examines how race-specific perceptions of law enforcement performance change across cohorts of Black and White youth in the past 20 years. Specifically, we explore how the race-specific cohort changes are related to changes in individual-level characteristics and perceived neighborhood racial composition. Methods: We analyze perceptions of law enforcement performance among 26,029 Black and White youth surveyed between 2000 and 2019 through Monitoring the Future 12th-grade surveys. OLS regression analyses, supplemented by mediation and moderation tests, are conducted to examine our research questions. Results: We find that cohort patterns unfolded differently for Black and White youth. Black youth in Cohort 2015–2019 report substantially lower scores on law enforcement performance than earlier cohorts, regardless of individual experiences and neighborhood contexts. In contrast, White youth in Cohort 2015–2019 display an increasing polarization: those in predominantly White neighborhoods report increased positive perceptions of law enforcement, while those in non-White neighborhoods report declining evaluations. Conclusions: Race-specific perceptions of law enforcement are linked to dynamic multi-level processes, including individual experiences, neighborhood context, and macro-level social changes. Our findings suggest that the recent generation of Black and White youth face unique racialized challenges that should be addressed with updated policy initiatives and targeted community support. Drawing on geocoded incident data, we analyse the concentration of UoF across space, time, and officers, and assess whether UoF hotspots correspond to areas with higher proportions of racial and ethnic minority residents. Findings reveal marked concentration: UoF incidents cluster in specific locations and time periods, and a disproportionate share of incidents involve a subset of officers. Multi-officer encounters were associated with a significantly elevated probability of suspect and officer injury. Notably, spatial analysis revealed no over-representation of UoF hotspots in predominantly minority neighbourhoods, suggesting that the geographic distribution of force is not systematically tied to the racial composition of the areas in which it occurs. The Police Journal: Theory Practice and Principles - Subscription at source 23/6/2026 Research article Mapping the hypothetical: A combined approach to lead prioritisation in cold case reviews of no-body homicides Investigations into major crimes and cold cases are often faced with an abundance of potential leads. What is required is a systematic method for organising, prioritising, and evaluating them. Although developing timelines and investigative leads is a familiar skill among investigators, the challenge lies in managing and prioritising these leads explicitly and effectively. This article outlines a novel combined approach that merges temporal analyses and the analysis of competing hypotheses to offer a synthesised effective means of explicitly stating, structuring, and organising leads in criminal cases. The approach is designed to map investigative pathways, reduce resource load, and provide a structured process for lead prioritisation. A real-world inspired case is used to exemplify the process which outlines how case strategies may be improved through hypothesis evaluation, supporting resource allocation, and assisting the prioritisation of leads. Global News (Canada) 23/6/2026 News Exploring the Association of the Dimensions of Organizational Justice with One Another and with Job Satisfaction Among Police Officers in China Job satisfaction for police officers is linked to many salient and beneficial outcomes. Improving the job satisfaction of officers can aid not only the officers, but the police organization and the community. One way to increase satisfaction from the job is to improve views of organizational justice, a concept that refers to the perception that an employing organization is fair in its treatment of its employees. The four major dimensions of organizational justice are informational, interpersonal, procedural, and distributive. The current study proposed that informational and interpersonal justice would be related to procedural and distributive justice, and procedural justice would be related to distributive justice. In turn, procedural and distributive justice were predicted to be associated with job satisfaction. Using data from police officers receiving training at three training centers in three different cities in China, the proposed model was supported. Informational and interpersonal justice were significant predictors of higher levels of procedural and distributive justice. Procedural justice had a significant association with higher levels of distributive justice. Lastly, both procedural and distributive justice had significant associations with higher levels of job satisfaction. Asian Journal of Criminology 23/6/2026 Research article A Shared Vision of Positive Policing from Black Young People and Police: Supporting Transformation and Reformation Efforts In the current study, we examined perceptions and features of positive police-youth encounters, both enforcement and non-enforcement in nature, between Black young people and sworn police personnel from a single large US metropolitan city. Data were collected from young people during individual interviews (N = 35) and from sworn police personnel within focus group discussions (N = 10 focus group discussions, 50 total personnel). We used an inductive approach to code qualitative data. Three subthemes emerged for positive non-enforcement interactions: (a) extracurricular interactions, (b) police assistance, and (c) other positive examples. Three subthemes also emerged for positive enforcement encounters: (a) respect and transparency, (b) limiting harmful police-youth encounters, and (c) policing skills to promote procedural justice. Both groups appreciated experiences reflecting procedural justice. Findings point toward the promise of a shared vision between Black young people and police that will require dedication and effort to achieve. Ultimately, this study suggests that harmful outcomes are not inevitable but instead reflect differences in police mindset and approach. Our findings also underscore the need for greater investment of existing policing resources into community-oriented and restorative policing efforts, as well as increased funding to support the communities in which they work. Race and Justice 23/6/2026 Research article Assessing “Reasonable” Police Uses of Force After Barnes v. Felix: How Time Framing Affects Public Perceptions Recent Supreme Court doctrine rejects a narrow “moment of threat” lens in favor of evaluating police use-of-force under the totality of the circumstances. Whether expanding the temporal frame changes how reasonableness and culpability are assigned remains unclear. We test this question using a nationally stratified experiment fielded the day Barnes v. Felix was decided (N = 2,401). Participants were randomly assigned to view one of three temporally distinct dashcam clips from the Barnes incident: a four-second final frame, a thirteen-second partial-context clip, or an approximately two-minute totality-of-circumstances clip. Respondents then evaluated officer reasonableness, responsibility, criminal liability, and internal discipline. Expansion beyond the final frame reduced perceived reasonableness and increased punitiveness. However, effects were non-linear: limited additional context produced the strongest condemnation, while full context tempered reactions. Temporal framing shapes public evaluations of police use-of-force, with the direction and magnitude of effects dependent on what the selected temporal frame reveals.
