Western Australia’s LFR trial draws criticism over privacy risks, limited consultation AUSTRALIA: A five-month mobile trial of live facial recognition in Western Australia has led to real-time results and concern. During a press conference Western Australia’s police commissioner Col Blanch was briefing reporters when a marked police van in the vicinity highlighted a woman in the crowd. It did this using facial recognition technology that scans faces, cross-referencing them instantly against a database of around 4,000 people on a police watchlist. Reconceptualizing Polyvictimization: Integrating Self-Reported Victimization and Police Use of Force Research on police violence (PV) narrowly defines it as physical force, disregarding its other forms, like psychological violence and neglect, and its co-occurrence with non-police victimization (NPV). This omission is important because of overlapping risk factors and potential compounding harm. Using the National Crime Victimization Survey and Police-Public Contact Survey, this study employs a more expansive definition that includes psychological and neglectful PV and assesses the overlap of these harms with NPV. Psychological PV was the most experienced form, and it was most prevalent among individuals who are male, younger, Black, city residents, and low-income. Any PV exposure, especially physical, was associated with a heightened NPV risk. While Black respondents had a higher likelihood of psychological PV than White individuals, its association with NPV was strongest for White respondents. Findings underscore the need to include PV in polyvictimization research and for alternatives to formal institutions that may perpetuate harm. Partner Stalking as a Possible Risk Factor for Subsequent Intimate Partner Violence Reported to New Zealand Police Effective police responses to intimate partner violence (IPV) require empirically supported risk assessment to guide intervention and resource allocation. IPV practice guidelines commonly emphasize partner stalking as a key risk factor for IPV recurrence, particularly for severe or lethal outcomes, yet evidence supporting this position is limited. The current study therefore examined 1,126 IPV cases reported to New Zealand Police (NZP) to explore whether partner stalking predicted (a) any IPV recurrence or (b) physical IPV recurrence in a 12-month follow-up. For each recurrence type, we examined whether partner stalking was predictive on its own, and then when controlling for other risk assessment information commonly used by NZP. Partner stalking initially predicted any IPV recurrence, irrespective of severity or type; but lost statistical significance when other commonly assessed risk factors were included. It did not predict physical IPV recurrence at all. Although not directly testing severe or lethal IPV outcomes emphasized in practice guidelines, this study provides a useful examination of the possible links between partner stalking and subsequent IPV more generally. Findings suggest that partner stalking may not warrant a special status in predicting IPV recurrence, because it often co-occurs with other risk factors that collectively provide stronger predictive utility. Overall, this study represents a valuable step toward grounding partner stalking and IPV risk assessment, prediction, and triage practices in empirical evidence. I am a detective garda. Here’s why an e-scooter ban is unenforceable REPUBLIC OF IRELAND: A couple of weeks ago a Garda colleague of mine walked out of a courtroom with his name cleared. He had been on a drugs patrol, not far from where Grace Lynch died in Finglas, Dublin, last January, when he saw what he believed was a drug deal involving a youth on an e-scooter. He identified himself. The young person refused to stop and my colleague began pursuing the suspect. Ultimately, for doing exactly what the public expects a garda to do, he was charged with dangerous driving. The judge acquitted him, but it took the better part of two stress-filled years, with the constant threat of conviction looming over him. Another colleague wasn’t as lucky. He recently received a two-year driving ban after pursuing masked scrambler riders in the north inner city. I know this man who was acquitted. I stood beside him in court. He is a diligent and conscientious guard. Unfortunately, these cases are not unusual. Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly recently told the Oireachtas justice committee that there were a further 10 gardaí before the courts for alleged dangerous or careless driving arising from incidents on duty that involved no injuries to the public or themselves. New laws to give NSW Police access to critical evidence for major investigations AUSTRALIA: The NSW Government will introduce legislation to give the NSW Police Force better tools to investigate homicides and organised crime, find missing persons and support coronial investigations. New laws will enable police to access unredacted images captured by toll cameras from public toll roads when investigating a suspected serious indictable offence, or in response to a missing person report. Under the current system, investigations into serious crime can be hampered as toll images provided to police are redacted, preventing investigators from identifying a suspect and potentially allowing a case to go cold. Two Ottawa police officers quietly left the service this month after one of them was accused of sexual misconduct and the other was criminally charged for alleged intimate partner violence, CBC News has learned. How Chinese police infiltrated and monitored the dark web with the help of AI tools CHINA: Researchers linked to law enforcement collected data and devised tools to help classify sensitive and illegal material. Chinese police scientists have offered a rare insight into how they were able to break into the dark web using artificial intelligence to decode underground content. The dark web – a realm unfamiliar to most – is built on encrypted communications and anonymous routing technologies that render user activity nearly untraceable, making it a haven for illegal activity and data trafficking. In recent years, researchers both in China and abroad have made progress in analysing dark web content, but most of those efforts have concentrated on English-language material and little research has been published about content in Chinese. But in May, a research team from the Criminal Investigation Police University of China published a paper in the Journal of Chinese Computer Systems about a model specifically trained to translate and assess dark web content in Chinese.
