FEATURE: At INTERPOL’s annual Heads of National Central Bureaux Conference last month, one of the most insightful updates was on the results of Operation Thunder, the operation to intercept and seize illegally traded wildlife and forestry commodities across the global supply chain, and identify, disrupt and dismantle the criminal networks involved, as Policing Insight’s Andrew Staniforth reports.

INTERVIEW: Wildlife and environmental crime is now estimated to be the fourth largest organised transnational crime sector, with significant overlaps into other forms of organised crime; Professor Phill Cassey, Director of the Wildlife Crime Research Hub at Adelaide University, explained to Policing Insight’s Sarah Gibbons about the need for dedicated policing units to tackle the crime, alongside new legislation and tougher penalties for offenders.

OPINION: Wildlife and environmental crime is surging, but with Australia’s unique wildlife species, high extinction rates, and policing challenges relating to its size and remote areas, understanding of its impact is limited; a new study by Postdoctoral Research Fellow Dr Isabelle Onley, Research Program Manager Katie Smith, Law Lecturer Dr Kellie Toole, and Director Professor Phill Cassey, of Adelaide University’s Wildlife Crime Research Hub, has led to the creation of the country’s first national database of wildlife and environmental crime, as well as four reforms that could help to tackle the problem.

ANALYSIS: While many experts believe the illegal wildlife trade is closely linked to crimes such as human trafficking, drug smuggling and money laundering, evidence has been thin on the ground; now new research from the University of Oxford’s Dr Michelle Anagnostou, Stellenbosch University PhD candidate Ashwell Glasson, Dr Brent Doberstein of the University of Waterloo, and Dr Peter Stoett of Ontario Tech University highlights the intersection between wildlife crime and organised crime networks in Canada.

INTERVIEW: A new campaign by the Naturewatch Foundation is highlighting the link between those who abuse animals and their use of violence against people; former detective inspector Mark Randell the charity’s Campaign Manager, spoke to Policing Insight’s Sarah Gibbons about the need for training for officers and prosecutors around that link, and the organisation’s efforts to encourage data sharing and raise awareness of the need to consider animal cruelty when investigating other cases.

FEATURE: A new report not only highlights the significant increases in wildlife trafficking – described as “off the scale” on some routes – but also the successes of a financial taskforce which is using traditional anti-money laundering and proceeds of crime techniques to target and disrupt offenders and supply chains, as Policing Insight’s Sarah Gibbons reports.

OPINION: The introduction of freeports, and the potential economic boost they can deliver, are an essential part of the UK Government’s ‘levelling up’ strategy; but University of Portsmouth Lecturer and former police detective Dr Paul Gilmour believes the approach could open up opportunities for a new wave of international crime including drug smuggling, the illegal wildlife trade, and money laundering.

ANALYSIS: The issue of environmental crime is complex and frequently misunderstood by wider society, with wildlife trafficking often the focus of attention, at the expense of activities such as the illegal exploitation of minerals and other natural resources; Policing Insight’s Chris Allen looks at the latest report from the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organised Crime on the impacts of environmental crime today, and what we may face in the future.

ANALYSIS: A series of inquiries have highlighted links between Australian casinos and money laundering, but despite the revelations there has so far been little individual accountability; journalist Georgina Kenyon believes the gaming empires are also guilty of providing opportunities for organised crime to wash the ‘dirty money’ derived from animal trafficking and other illicit wildlife activity, making Australia a favoured location for those looking to profit from environmental crimes.

OPINION: Governments and philanthropists have poured significant sums of money into tackling the illegal wildlife trade, with militarised anti-poaching projects and cutting-edge technology leading the targeting of the trade; but Professor Rosaleen Duffy of the University of Sheffield argues that addressing the problem purely as a criminal matter fails to reduce demand or offer economic alternatives for those driven to poaching.

INTERVIEW: In the latest in a series of interviews with leading figures involved in the research and investigation of organised crime, Policing Insight’s Chris Allen spoke to John M Sellar, author and former detective and UN wildlife crime specialist, about the route from Scottish cop to the UN, the need for transnational co-operation, and the difficulties of trying to overcome police and government corruption around the globe.

FEATURE: An independent report into the UK’s efforts to target illicit profits from the illegal wildlife trade has called for a more nuanced, consistent and multi-level analytical approach to counter the laundering of illicit proceeds, as Policing Insight’s Chris Allen reports.
