Police guidance that advises officers should seize digital devices from women who have unexpectedly miscarried has been lambasted as “outrageous” by campaigners. Investigators have been told that signs of “knowledge and intention in relation to the pregnancy may be demonstrated through digital evidence” and that “the seizure and examination of digital devices used by the woman during her pregnancy should be considered”. The guidance to forces was contained in a “practice advice” document on child death investigations, issued by the National Police Chiefs’ Council. It tells detectives that women’s internet search histories, digital communications and health apps — such as menstrual cycle and fertility trackers — “may all provide information” to investigators. Det Supt Ricky Dhanda took on the role after his predecessor, Paul Kessell, was forced to resign after pleading guilty to a drink driving charge. Mr Dhanda is understood to have been brought into the force at the same time as former Chief Constable Scott Chilton, who retired last month after moving to Hampshire Police following being accused of having relationships with two colleagues. A spokesman for Dorset Police confirmed that Mr Dhanda was currently on restricted duties and had been served with a notice of gross misconduct. If found guilty of gross misconduct proceedings, he faces dismissal from the force. She made 60 complaints about her treatment and the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has now launched an independent investigation into six of them, including those relating to the search.
