FEATURE: The latest Africa Organised Crime Index published by the EU-funded ENACT organisation reveals that criminal groups across the continent adapted quickly to the COVID-19 pandemic, while the illicit activities of state actors and the growth in trafficking of both people and cocaine represent major challenges, as Policing Insight’s Chris Allen reports.

FEATURE: This month a trial began in Belgium of 23 people accused of involvement in the human smuggling ring that led to the deaths of 39 Vietnamese migrants in a lorry in the UK in 2019; with such high-profile cases making modern slavery an ever-more visible crime – and the subject of significant government funding – Policing Insight’s Chris Allen takes a closer look at how law enforcement is tackling the issue.

ANALYSIS: Europe’s migrant crisis took a tragic turn this month, with the death of 27 people attempting to cross the Channel from France to the UK; with a significant rise in illegal EU border crossings over the past two years, the Frontex agency has found itself increasingly in the frontline of a political and humanitarian crisis, which has brought its own challenges for the organisation, as Policing Insight’s Andrew Staniforth reports.

FEATURE: The sentencing in September of a UK-based people trafficking network highlighted the huge financial gains such gangs can make, and the continuing market in those who fall victim to modern slavery; but as Policing Insight’s Andrew Staniforth reports, efforts by the UK’s Independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner to raise awareness of the problem (particularly in the financial sector) and develop a collaborative response should serve as a model for other agencies around the world.

OPINION: Last month an Australian couple were jailed after being found guilty of enslaving a vulnerable Tamil woman for eight years, in one of the few cases where people have been prosecuted for slavery offences rather than related crimes; Dr John Coyne of the Australian Strategic Policy Institute believes the case should act as a reminder for police, prosecutors and the public that modern slavery exists in many areas of society, and also highlights latest UN policy guidance to help states tackle the issue.

FEATURE: While COVID-19 restrictions and lockdowns significantly impacted on criminal activity in many areas, the latest Europol report confirms that migrant smuggling and human trafficking quickly adapted to a new normal; Policing Insight’s Chris Allen looks at the scale of the problem, efforts to target smuggling and trafficking operations, and the trade-off between the right to privacy and the criminal exploitation of encrypted communications channels.
