INTERVIEW: Ahead of next month’s 4th World LGBTQI+ Criminal Justice Conference in Austin, Texas, Policing Insight’s Christine Townsend spoke to Austin Police Department’s Sergeant Mike Wilmore-Crumrine, Conference Executive Director, about his own experiences as an officer who is gay, the work being done to improve internal workplace cultures for queer-identifying officers as well as the communities policing serves, and why the conference theme of ‘Bridging the Gap’ is also crucial part of moving forwards.

ANALYSIS: With police officers in the UK and Ireland operating under immense pressures, University of the West of England Senior Lecturers Dr Cody Porter and Dr Paul Gavin share findings from their recent research projects into specific sources of stress and its profound impacts on officers’ mental health in both jurisdictions, and call for a shift in the way mental health is treated – “not as an afterthought, but as an operational priority”.

FEATURE: With retention of officers a major challenge for police services around the world, research by Sergeant Jessica Mullen of the London Police Service in Ontario highlights the scale of the problem, the reasons behind officer departures and the disparity between who is leaving, and the need for police agencies to conduct exit interviews and increase data collection to improve understanding of the issues, as Policing Insight’s Matthew Wood reports.

FEATURE: Speaking at the recent Senior Women In Policing conference, Vanisha Mistry, Chair of the National Women of Colour in Policing group, has called on police leaders to address the barriers which prevent career progression for women of colour in the service, and to invest in the pipeline of future leaders, as Policing Insight’s Sarah Gibbons reports.

INTERVIEW: College of Policing interim Deputy CEO Jo Noakes tells Policing Insight’s Ian Weinfass about possible major changes to the promotion process for sergeants and inspectors in England and Wales, and why the “emotive” and “personal” issue of workforce reform needs to be carefully handled.

ANALYSIS: A recent article in the Journal of Contemporary Ethnography shared the personal experiences of a senior police officer (‘Phil Corkhill’, a pseudonym) rejoining their force from a College of Policing secondment during Covid-19, and highlighted how leaders often conform to authoritarian and potentially damaging leadership approaches; in this article, University of Portsmouth Criminology Professor Dr Sarah Charman (who co-authored the original piece) explores the issues around prevailing management cultures and the ‘appearance over substance’ concerns of ‘leadership theatre’.
