INNOVATION: With forces in England and Wales facing surging demand from domestic abuse victims, Kent Police embarked on a randomised control trial of a new rapid video response (RVR) to victims; Stacey Rothwell, Network Director for England’s Eastern Region of seven forces, explains the methodology behind the trial, and the key findings – including greater victim satisfaction, faster police response times and a 50% increase in arrests – which have led Kent to a force-wide introduction of RVR.

This involved copying evidence onto CDs, DVDs, USB drives and paper files, and hand-delivering them to the CPS. ANALYSIS: Eye-witness testimony can be crucial in many investigations and subsequent court cases, but how reliable are child witnesses, and how accurate are their recollections? Psychology Lecturer Ben Cotterill believes that if investigators use the right questioning techniques, the testimony of children can be as accurate as that of adults – and in some situations even more reliable.

FEATURE: When Wisconsin police officer Adam Meyers was involved in the fatal shooting of an armed suspect, the resulting mental health challenges he faced – and the associated stigma – led him into a downward spiral of poor coping mechanisms and suicidal thoughts; now he’s using his own experiences to inspire other struggling officers to speak out and seek help, and urging leaders and law enforcement agencies to address the mental health stigma.

OPINION: A fatal crash involving a runaway freight train in British Columbia three years ago has raised awareness among the Canadian public of the unique investigative and jurisdictional powers bestowed on company-operated railway police; Professor Bruce Campbell of Canada’s York University believes it’s time this “antiquated relic” of private-sector policing was replaced with an independent public railway police regime similar to the British model.

OPINION: The new senior command team announced by recently appointed Met Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley includes evidence-based policing pioneer Professor Lawrence Sherman as the force’s first Chief Scientific Officer; Policing Lecturer Tom Andrews believes the appointment heralds a clear commitment by the Met – and British policing more widely – to research-informed practice.
