Sir John is one of the UK’s longest‑serving and most experienced Chief Constables in the UK.

Nationally, he leads the country’s largest police collaboration, the National Police Air Service (NPAS). He has also overseen the national rollout of Police Education (PolEd), an innovative, teacher‑written programme delivered in schools to help keep children safe by strengthening their understanding of risk, consequences, and the law.

Since 2021, Sir John has served as national Chair of the Chief Police Officers’ Staff Association (CPOSA), providing advice, guidance and professional support to chief officers across the country.

Regionally, he leads one of the largest counter‑terrorism units outside London and holds responsibility for Regional Scientific Support Services (RSSS) across Yorkshire and the Humber, as well as the Regional and Organised Crime Unit (YHROCU).

He has acted as an ambassador for numerous national police charities, demonstrating his support for frontline officers, staff and their families.

In 2022, he was appointed a Deputy Lieutenant of West Yorkshire.
