Police Oracle - Subscription at source 5/2/2021 News The Effect of GPS Refresh Rate on Measuring Police Patrol in Micro-Places With the increasing prevalence of police interventions implemented in micro hot-spots of crime, the accuracy with which officer foot patrols can be measured is increasingly important for the robust evaluation of such strategies. However, it is currently unknown how the accuracy of GPS traces impact upon our understanding of where officers are at a given time and how this varies for different GPS refresh rates. Most existing studies that use GPS data fail to acknowledge this. This study uses GPS data from police officer radios and ground truth data to estimate how accurate GPS data are for different GPS refresh rates. The similarity of the assumed paths are quantitatively evaluated and the analysis shows that different refresh rates lead to diverging estimations of where officers have patrolled. These results have significant implications for the measurement of police patrols in micro-places and evaluations of micro-place based interventions. Policing Insight 5/2/2021 Advertisement, Feature, Jobs Evaluating the Vermont State Police’s Peace Model Training Program: Phase 1 The current study is the first phase of a larger evaluation of the Vermont State Police (VSP) PEACE Model interview training program. This evaluation measures the impact of the program on trainees’ interviewing knowledge and attitudes, and opinions about the program. VSP Members participating in Tier 1 (N = 72) and Tier 2 (N = 46) PEACE interview training completed a questionnaire, both before and after training, about (1) their knowledge of interviewing and related concepts, (2) their attitudes about various interviewing practices, and (3) their beliefs about the training session. Results showed that training had a large effect on knowledge for participants in both training courses. As well, a majority of Tier 1 and Tier 2 trainees reported attitudes in line with scientific consensus after training. Specifically, most items related to eyewitness testimony, memory, and coercion were endorsed post-training by the majority of officers, while items covering deception detection and interrogation rights were endorsed less frequently. Additionally, trainees reported that their training experience was quite positive. Implications for the program and future directions for training are discussed. Psychology Crime and Law - Registration at source 5/2/2021 Research article Campus Police Response to Mental Illness: Training, Collaboration, and Perceived Effectiveness Most research on police response to mental illness has not included officers who work in college settings. This study examined the frequency with which campus police are asked to respond to mental health crises, their preparedness to do so, and their perceived effectiveness. Additionally, this study gathered information about campus and community partners and examined differences between mental health-focused calls involving students versus community members. Seventy-six campus police departments participated in the study and reported that 10% of calls involve a mental health issue, with wellness checks and suicidality being common student issues and homelessness, violence toward others, and substance abuse being common issues for calls involving community members. Over half of officers have Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training, and the number of CIT-trained officers was related to perceived effectiveness at managing student mental health calls. Implications for mental health resources on college campuses and the need for additional research in this area are discussed. Policing Insight - Subscription at source 5/2/2021 Analysis, Feature Mediation of Complaints Against Police: A Review of Programs in Los Angeles and New York City The investigation of complaints against the police is important to law, order and justice. The public expects high ethical standards from its police service and when breaches occur, complaints often follow. How the police respond to complaints can influence the trust and confidence that underpins the civilian-police relationship. This paper examines some of the key issues faced by police services in the management of complaints and reviews the effectiveness of mediation as a measure to rebuild relations. The Los Angeles and New York City Police Departments were selected for the study because there are very few civilian-police complaints mediation programs in operation and these sites had reports on the public record that indicated some success. A qualitative case study approach was used, incorporating public source material and interviews with key informants.
