Noteworthy among its findings was that after 12 consecutive years of decline, the rate of police-reported drug crime in Canada increased 13% from 2023 to 2024: the largest increases came from simple drug possession (i.e. having or holding a small amount of drugs for your own personal use), followed by trafficking (i.e. selling or providing drugs to another person). This is despite reforms over the past five years requiring federal law enforcement to explore alternatives to criminal charges for simple possession, as well as several provinces claiming to have decriminalised or deprioritised charges for this offence. As more U.S. agencies quietly adopt generative AI systems like Axon’s Draft One to turn body-camera audio into official reports, the central question is whether any promised efficiency gains outweigh the new risks to accuracy, accountability and due process. Forbes 4/1/2026 News A research-focused framework for empirical method validation in digital and multimedia evidence This article presents a research-focused structured framework for validating empirical methods in digital and multimedia forensic science. Grounded in foundational principles from traditional forensic disciplines, the framework bridges methodological gaps by adapting validation strategies used in trace evidence, toxicology, and DNA analysis. It emphasizes reproducibility, legal defensibility, and operational applicability, integrating scientific guidance and recommendations from the National Academy of Sciences, the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology, alongside the Federal Rule of Evidence 702 and the Daubert criteria. The framework comprises 10 iterative steps, including custom dataset control, pilot phase calibration, formalized error mapping, and embedded community review. It supports both full empirical validation and interim litigation-focused adaptation, enabling forensic practitioners to meet evidentiary standards without compromising scientific integrity. By elevating statistical planning, transparency, and reproducibility, the framework advances the credibility and courtroom readiness of digital and multimedia forensic methods.
