Records were collected from PsychINFO and ProQuest and had to report at least one quantitative criminal justice outcome, include data from a U.S. sample and involve original research. Thirty-six records (288,066 sexual assault cases) were analyzed. Results were stratified by reported cases, referred cases, charged cases, and victim age. Studies show that 72.09% to 92.66% of sampled cases are founded (M = 89.21%), 17.73% to 53.42% result in arrest (M = 27.25%), 13.60% to 69.57% result in referral (M = 31.36%), 3.28% to 83.16% result in charging (M = 19.58%), and only 1.86% to 40.31% result in conviction (M = 8.28%). This considerable variability in case outcomes is related to differences in cases included or excluded (e.g., age criterion, only sampling cases with sexual assault kits); thus, these studies are not reflective of all sexual assault cases. Studies were most likely to report arrest rates, followed by charging, referral, conviction, and founding. Overall, we have a good picture of what attrition looks like in adolescent-adult sexual assault cases from the 1980s to early 2010s in the Midwest and Southern CA. More updated research in the remaining parts of the country is needed, particularly from rural locales. Specific recommendations for more precise measurement and reporting methods are provided to improve our understanding of attrition and strengthen where, how, and with whom interventions are needed. Trauma Violence and Abuse - Subscription at source 16/11/2024 Research article How far have we advanced in simulation-based training for policing and law enforcement? A literature review 2014–24 The twenty-first century demands on police and law enforcement similarly demand effective, efficient and relevant officer training endeavours. Guided by the PRISMA literature review model this study identified and analysed a total of 35 peer-reviewed studies (2014–24) centred on simulation scenario-based training offering insight into (1) what are the different types and platforms used in scenario-based simulation training and (2) what skills are being trained in simulation-based exercises. The findings revealed a preference for high-fidelity technological tools for short training scenarios centred on tactical and procedural knowledge. Conversely, incidents that require conversations and negotiations remain restricted to platforms with limited technological integration or live role-players. The review identified (1) skills for daily operations, decision making, de-escalation training, major incident management were those most commonly attributed to simulation-based training and (2) the extent to which virtual environments can replicate major incidents that are sufficiently immersive for training continues to be a work in progress. Policing: A Journal of Policy and Practice 16/11/2024 Research article A Systematic Review of Self-Determination Theory’s Application in Military and Police Organizations Self-determination theory (SDT) represents one of the most comprehensive theories of human motivation and psychological growth. SDT theorizes how social contexts may sustain or inhibit human functioning, depending on their ability to fulfill individuals’ basic psychological needs (autonomy, competence, and relatedness). Although there are some reviews and meta-analyses that address the application of the SDT in organizational environments, no systematic review has previously been dedicated to broadly investigating this framework in military and police organizations and training institutes. This work aims to apply this theory in hierarchical settings and provide an overview of the outcomes associated with the principles of SDT. For this purpose, after a full-text analysis of 2147 studies, we selected 29 articles that aligned with our objective. Our analysis focused on outcomes related to well-being, engagement, various types of motivation, positive affect, prosocial behavior, and other constructs. The purpose of the current systematic review is to understand the dynamic interplay between motivation and positive outcomes in military and police contexts through SDT framework. Journal of Police and Criminal Psychology 16/11/2024 Research article How the ICAC’s investigation into senior NT Police officers’ misconduct was rigged from the start AUSTRALIA: The latest ICAC investigation report into the TRG officers who swore false statements to the court provides us with perhaps the best example yet of how those in positions of power in the Territory set up a supposedly independent investigation to appear independent, while secretly ensuring its predetermined outcomes fall in their favour. What was exposed this week should outrage every Territorian and a public inquiry held immediately to get to the bottom of how allegations of criminal conduct against senior police members has been blatantly covered up by the body investigating it, which itself may have committed further crimes to keep it all contained and nobody held accountable.
