Police are sworn to protect and serve their communities. However, what happens when youth do not believe police are willing or able to protect them? The source article examines how youth perceptions of police influence the perceived protectability of gangs and how that perceived gang protection influences gang joining. We found that if youth do not believe police will protect them, youth will be more likely to believe that gangs can provide that protection. Youth that have a higher belief in the protectability of gangs will subsequently be more likely to join a gang for that protection. The study argues a self-help hypothesis, in that if youth don’t believe society can protect them, they will take matters into their own hands and find that protection elsewhere. The source article suggests that gang and violence prevention programs should seek to strengthen the relationships between police and youth since youth who trust police may not feel the need to resort to gangs for protection.
