BBC 14/4/2025 News Injuries and death proximate to conducted energy weapon use: A systematic review Despite the widespread use of conducted energy weapons (CEWs), their safety has remained a controversial issue following high-profile deaths during police-public interactions in which a CEW was deployed. To date, there have been two systematic reviews addressing the safety of CEWs. However, both were restricted to studies that were of high methodological rigour but narrow in scope, potentially limiting their generalizability to the circumstances under which CEWs are often used. The current systematic review aimed to expand on previous research in this area by including all documents examining injuries and death proximate to CEW use between 2010 and 2021, regardless of methodological rigour. Using a broad definition of injury that included psychological, physiological, or physical implications of the CEW, the results revealed that the CEW is generally a safe intervention option. The psychological and physiological effects associated with the CEW were typically minimal, of short duration, and not of clinical significance. When physical injuries occurred, they were typically minor in severity. However, while serious injuries and deaths are infrequent, they do occur and future research should attempt to better understand when these adverse outcomes are more likely to occur so they can be prevented.
