FEATURE: A new Police Foundation report into the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in policing across England and Wales has called for improved data literacy – particularly at senior leadership levels – alongside national frameworks for digital technology delivery, data standardisation and the ethical use of AI, to ensure forces leverage maximum potential from the new tech while improving service to the public, as Policing Insight’s Keith Potter reports.

INNOVATION: Avon and Somerset Police’s Dementia Safeguarding Scheme is using Bluetooth tags and GPS trackers to help those with dementia if they go missing – reducing the amount of police resources deployed on tracing vulnerable people and protecting loved ones – as scheme pioneer Inspector Stuart King told Policing Insight’s Sarah Gibbons.

INNOVATION: Project Minerva, a collaboration between Essex Police and Nottingham Trent University, is using data-driven mapping to highlight both offences of violence against women and girls (VAWG) and areas where the fear of crime is greatest, to enable the force and community partners to tackle VAWG more effectively, as Policing Insight’s Sarah Gibbons reports.

INNOVATION: A Dorset Police trial which expanded the video response approach used with domestic abuse cases to a wider range of calls and crimes has seen significant increases in arrest rates, positive outcomes and satisfaction levels for victims, and potential savings of £1.5million; now the approach could be expanded across the whole county and shared with other forces, as Supt Stewart Gates explained to Policing Insight’s Sarah Gibbons.

INNOVATION: With the police response to those in mental health distress – whether in relation to safeguarding, crime or public protection – a challenge for policing globally, Edge Hill University’s Dr Jude Towers looks at the results of the mental health diversion and advisory panel initiative in Lancashire, which offers an alternative out-of-court disposal approach to mental health-related offending that is winning support from officers as well as those in crisis.

ANALYSIS: The use of wearable technology to monitor health and wellbeing continues to expand significantly; Dr Carol Cox, Head of the Liverpool Centre of Advanced Policing Studies at Liverpool John Moore’s University, is leading a research team from the Centre in its work on the police use of such technology, and explains the challenges and benefits identified to date, as well as early indications from the latest study due to be released in April.

INNOVATION: The UK’s first team dedicated to investigating crimes committed by registered sex offenders, launched by Greater Manchester Police initially as a pilot project more than two years ago, has now hit a 90% solved outcome rate for investigations, and has become a permanent part of the force structure, as unit head DI Marc Baker told Policing Insight’s Sarah Gibbons.

INNOVATION: New technology is being used to help police and local authorities improve road safety, with AI-enabled cameras identifying bad driving on roads in Devon and Cornwall, and extensive harsh-breaking data helping local authorities to predict potential collision blackspots, as Policing Insight’s Sarah Gibbons reports.
