OPINION: The Independent Centre for Harassment Resolution (ICHR) was set up in 2021 to investigate workplace violence and related misconduct in the RCMP, following a landmark lawsuit that led to a payout of more than $125 million; but University Canada West Associate Professor Dr Jason Walker believes the ICHR is failing in that mission – and that action is needed urgently to rectify the shortcomings, both for the sake of the organisation and the communities it serves.

OPINION: In January this year, four years after the suicide of Vancouver Police Constable Nicole Chan following her devastating experiences of bullying and harassment at work, a coroner’s inquest delivered 12 recommendations highlighting severe systemic issues within the Department; University Canada West Associate Professor Jason Walker argues that this latest example of the toxic side of cop culture and the ‘blue wall’ of silence is more evidence of the need for a lawmakers’ response to preventable violence at work.

Dr Jason Walker, PsyD, Ph.D., CTSS, CCAC, CCI, DAAETS, SHRM-SCP, CPHR, C.Psychol, is an associate professor and vice chair of the Senate at the University Canada West. In addition, he holds adjunct clinical professor position at the City University of Seattle School of Behavioral Sciences and adjunct professor of psychology at Adler University. He is a chartered psychologist, chartered professional in human resources, crisis interventionist, addiction and recovery specialist, diplomate for the American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress and published researcher. He is internationally recognized as an expert in the assessment and intervention related to workplace violence. He has been a part of the intersection of organizational psychology and mental health for over 20 years. For the past decade, Dr Walker has worked as a practitioner in Canada's rural and remote Indigenous communities. Dr Walker is the recipient of the Governor-General of Canada’s Caring Hands Medal, the Priory of Canada Order of St John and the Order of St. John Serving Member (SMStJ), Paul Harris Fellow for Rotary International and the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St John Priory of Canada for life-saving.
