Dr Alan Beckley is an Honorary Industry Fellow, International Studies and Education, in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Technology Sydney, Australia. Alan was a police officer in the UK for 30 years, serving in the Surrey and West Mercia forces; after retiring he worked as a management consultant with forces in the UK and Europe, and taught at four UK universities. An expert in corporate governance and police ethics/human rights issues, risk and contingency planning, and comparative legal and policing studies, in 2010 he moved to Australia and became a Senior Lecturer at Charles Sturt University, Australian Graduate School of Policing at Manly. From 2012, Alan was employed by Western Sydney University in positions in the Office of Widening Participation; he also taught several subjects and retired in 2016. In 2019, he was awarded a PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) by Western Sydney University, and the subject of his dissertation was: Examining human rights and ethical practice in Australian policing: A New South Wales Case Study.
