Deisy Carrillo began her career in Venezuela as a qualified Morgue Technician, achieving a Diploma of Higher Education at the Medicatura Forence Miranda. The qualification and role required an understanding of biology, criminal law, evidence collection, identification methods and forensic analysis. Deisy moved to the UK in 2003 and completed a Diploma of Higher Education in Social Sciences, and a BA (Hons) Degree in Criminology with Criminal Justice at the University of West London (UWL). During her time at the University she became a peer mentor, and in 2018 she was named UWL Peer Mentor of the Year. As an academic, Deisy has a particular interest in policing, domestic abuse, and social inequality and is currently completing a Masters in Policing and she will also undertake a PHD Degree in early 2022. Her current role as a Project Co-ordinator at Hillingdon Women’s Centre involves overseeing the delivery of the Workplace ‘Safe Space’ Programme that provides domestic abuse training for businesses and the development of virtual and physical spaces for victims/survivors to safely access support. Deisy also volunteers as a Researcher at the SHARAN Project, a leading domestic abuse charity that is also the national lead partner for the Employers Domestic Abuse Covenant. As a professional and domestic abuse survivor, Deisy is committed to encouraging and promoting women’s human rights to transform mindsets, including how individuals and organisations view Violence Against Women and Girls, how they respond to it, and, more importantly how it can be prevented.
