Dr Amie Birkhamshaw joined the Police and Crime Commissioner’s Office for Hertfordshire in September 2014 as Head of Policy and Engagement. Before this she spent three years at The Police Foundation leading a major project on police effectiveness with Thames Valley Police and Bedfordshire Police to reduce violent crime and burglary. Between 2007 and 2011 Amie worked at Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC) and the Audit Commission leading value for money national studies, inspections and audits in Policing, Criminal Justice, Fire and Local Government. Her PhD doctorate in Criminology from King’s College, London critically examined the role of citizenship and new public management in the rolling out of Neighbourhood Policing.
Amie’s current role involves engaging with a range of public services, businesses, community and voluntary organisations to develop strategies and policies around crime, policing and community safety on behalf of the Police and Crime Commissioner. Amie leads key policy areas outlined in the Police and Crime Plan including Stop and Search, Road Safety, Mental Health and Criminal Justice. Amie is also responsible for writing strategic documents, speeches and responding to consultations on behalf of the Commissioner to HMIC, College of Policing, the Home Office and Association of Police and Crime Commissioners.
