Four dedicated theatres on the show floor will host a wide range of thought-provoking, CPD-accredited seminar sessions over the two days of the Show, with a focus on Health & Wellbeing, IT developments, Emerging Technologies for the emergency services and Lessons Learnt from operational incidents. In the Health & Wellbeing Theatre, Jo Tearall, Sam Davies and James Mallows of Devon and Cornwall Police will share details of the “surfing therapy” programme they have formulated for treating mental health conditions including stress and PTSD. It is based around a wealth of scientific research and ongoing projects in the military and charity sectors.
Oscar Kilo Wellbeing van
Oscar Kilo will be updating visitors on its National Police Wellbeing Service and talking about the “wellbeing van” it is bringing to the Show. This is one of a fleet of bespoke-fitted vans which can deploy to operating bases across England and Wales, offering physical, psychological and financial health checks to officers and staff, supported by occupational health staff from each force area.
Damian Chapman, Head of Communications – Police Care UK
Damian Chapman, Head of Communications of Police Care UK will share the findings of a national police survey it undertook with the University of Cambridge which found that one in five police are suffering with a form of PTSD yet 83 per cent don’t even know it. This session in the Health & Wellbeing Theatre, talks about the practical steps that police can take now to improve their trauma resilience and training.
Hayley Aley, National Women’s Board Representative – Police Federation of England and Wales
The Police Federation of England and Wales will talk about the findings of the first-ever survey looking at how the menopause affects police officers and staff in the workplace, and how the findings can be used to facilitate better support and inform future policy and guidance.

British Red Cross will give an update on its Resilient Responders Programme which aims to build individual and team resilience through a range of psychosocial support and interventions.
There will also be sessions on the psychological impacts on control room staff, equality and diversity and men’s mental health.

Sessions will include how Cloud is pushing operational efficiency on the frontline and how 5G could improve operational response. The programme will also take a look at minimising data costs and how the public’s use of technology will change how they interact with the 999 service in the future. For example, there will be a seminar on “what3words,” a simple system that gives every 3x3m square in the world a three-word address which enables emergency services to accurately find any location and share it more quickly, easily and with less ambiguity than any other system.

Emma Parkinson, Course Director, Emergency Planning and Crowded Places, Coventry University
This new seminar theatre will explore how Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning could be used to improve emergency response. It will focus on the training benefits of Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) technologies and look at emerging vehicle technologies including electric vehicles and connected cars.
The multi-agency (JESIP) benefits of training in a simulated immersive environment will be discussed in a session looking at Coventry University’s Simulation Centre has been working with West Midlands emergency services and council planners on a training exercise. Inspector 4474 Mark Teago, West Midlands Police will be among those sharing learnings from the experience in the Q and A.

Professor Mark Wilson, co-founder of the GoodSAM platform that alerts doctors, nurses, paramedics and those trained in basic life support to emergencies around them, will present a session on a trial for live streaming of video from incident scenes.

Sessions will include a focus on lessons to be learnt from frontline operations. Scottish Violence Reduction Unit will explain how Scotland has been so successful in dealing with knife crime, while another session entitled “Murder is Everyone’s Business” will cover the criminal investigation into a gang-related murder where multi-agency collaboration led to many successful convictions. The Cabinet’s Office’s Resilience Direct and ISRG Civil Contingencies Secretariat will also be presenting sessions.

Virtual Reality Training

Exhibiting at the Show for the first time this year, The Simulation Centre will use two 95-inch screens to give visitors a taste of its immersive and dynamic virtual training facility at Coventry University with 10 metre curved screen. XVR Simulations on the stand will recreate a recent multi-agency exercise held at the Simulation Centre, which visitors will be able to participate in and receive informal feedback on their performance. It will also be possible to trial the centre’s social media simulator which safely recreates realistic and interactive social media and media coverage of emergency events.
