Mail Online 22/12/2024 News Burning questions: investigating officer support for hot spots policing This study examines patrol officers’ perceptions of a newly implemented hot spots policing strategy within the Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD). Extensive research has shown that violent crime is disproportionately concentrated in very small geographic locations. Hot spots policing leverages this phenomenon by focusing police resources in these small, high-crime areas. While the effectiveness of hot spots policing in reducing crime is well-documented, the perspectives of frontline officers responsible for its implementation remain under-explored. Understanding officers’ attitudes during implementation is important, as buy-in may ultimately influence the success of policing strategies. This study addresses this gap by identifying three key factors influencing officer support for the strategy. Findings revealed that direct observations of crime reduction positively impacted officer support for hot spots policing. Concerns about officer safety and workload had negative influence. Interestingly, higher perceptions of command involvement were also associated with decreased support, which suggested that there was potential resistance at implementation. These findings highlight the importance of addressing officer concerns by reallocating resources, training, and enhanced engagement. By promoting a supportive environment and sharing positive outcomes, police executives can improve the consistency and effectiveness of hot spots policing.
