However, despite the hype surrounding de-escalation, a clear definition still is lacking. At the same time, debates about de-escalation have not been grounded in, or informed by, police practice. The lack of a solid definition is problematic in practice, as police struggle with potentially conflicting considerations. This study utilizes interviews with use of force experts and a survey of frontline officers to produce a better understanding of de-escalation. The results highlight the importance of nuance in police-public interactions, which are highly variable. In particular, de-escalation cannot be conceptualized as a one-size-fits-all solution capable of solving all elevated police-citizen interactions. A practical definition of de-escalation must also acknowledge that force may sometimes be required. The perspective that use of force is incompatible with de-escalation does not reflect the realities of policing. The authors provide a fuller picture of women’s formal help-seeking behavior regarding police contact in instances of intimate partner violence (IPV) by replacing a binary measure of police contact with the frequency of police contact to provide better insight into the dynamics and contexts of IPV. However, this picture is not complete; in this letter, we propose building upon this measure to better understand the context-specifics of IPV. Methods: In reviewing Qiu et al.’s manuscript, we critically consider the measures utilized. Results: This letter aims to contribute to an important methodological discussion that Qiu and colleagues (2023) raise by empowering participants to define what ‘needing the police’ and other avenues of help following instances of IPV mean during data collection and by creating a measure that specifies contexts of abuse. Conclusions: The authors make contributions to the core challenge of quantifying and operationalizing social constructs within IPV and family violence research; however, it is critical to continue to examine the measures used in addition to exploring survivor needs outside of the criminal legal system. Objectives: The police killing of George Floyd energized the Black Lives Matter (BLM) social movement across the United States in the summer of 2020. We test the impact on public perceptions of the fairness and legitimacy of the police and law. Methods: A four-state, three-wave, short-term longitudinal study (N = 1048; Arizona, Michigan, New York, and Texas) used a novel design focused on differences in change over time to test whether public perceptions changed after the killing of Floyd. Results: Fielding multiple outcome markers, as well as multiple pseudo-placebo comparison variables, we found that perceptions of police procedural justice, distributive justice, and bounded authority, as well as perceptions of the legitimacy of the police and law, declined following Floyd's murder. Levels of trust in science, identification with healthcare workers, and collective efficacy perceptions did not change. As discussed in the paper, the effects varied by participants’ political views. Conclusions: The police killing of George Floyd and subsequent protests seemed to have damaged attitudes towards police and the law.
