We examine the impact of one of the most widely used commercial systems in the United Kingdon, through observations of platform use and in-depth interviews with users across ranks and strategic, tactical and operational roles; and across specialist units including criminal intelligence, ‘county lines’ organised crime and victim safeguarding. Drawing on analytical tools science and technology studies, our analysis digitally nuances Cohen's seminal concept of net-widening by examining how digital policing is predicated on complex police–commercial relationships. We show how the data system itself generates affordances that drive insatiable data collection, transforms mundane encounters into surveillance opportunities, revalorises mundane information as intelligence, and reconfigures the meaning of suspicion and disrupts the temporalities of policing itself. These undermine increasingly fragile principles of police legitimacy and due process, and raise concerns around transparency and accountability in policing. BBC 7/5/2025 News ‘The dream to know everything about everyone’: Affordances of commercial data systems and digital net-widening in policing This article empirically analyses the use of new commercial integrated data systems in policing. We examine the impact of one of the most widely used commercial systems in the United Kingdom, through observations of platform use and in-depth interviews with users across ranks and strategic, tactical and operational roles; and across specialist units including criminal intelligence, ‘county lines’ organised crime and victim safeguarding. Theoretical Criminology 7/5/2025 Research article Experimental evidence shows police leaders may make strategic decisions depending on visuals presented: results from a multi-armed survey experiment To examine whether various data structures, visualizations, and “nudges” impact police leader’s (lieutenant and above) strategic crime prevention decisions. We utilized a multi-armed survey experiment in which police leaders (N = 1195) were randomly assigned various data visuals and “nudges” to investigate their impact on police leader’s decision-making intentions. When police leaders were presented process behavioral charts and hot spot street segment maps, they more accurately identified jurisdictional crime trends and high crime areas, respectively. However, when presented with kernel density maps compared to hot spot maps, police leaders were not influenced by data visuals and no more likely to respond to crime problems with empirically promising evidence-based practices. This study highlights the value of data presentation and visualizations in how data is presented (e.g., charts, maps) influences police leaders’ decision-making. Data analysts should present refined (micro-unit) data visuals to avoid misappropriating police resources in areas where police resources may not be heavily needed. Further, process behavioral charts provide realistic variations in jurisdictional crime trends, which were clearly interpreted by police leaders. Police researchers should consistently keep police leaders apprised of “what works, what doesn’t, what’s promising,” while police leaders should engage with data/research and consider implementing evidence-based practices. Journal of Experimental Criminology 7/5/2025 Research article “Are you being served?” Evaluating the impact of training on police officers’ service orientation This study aims to examine whether and how a training program affects police officers’ perceptions of policing as a service-oriented profession. Given the increasing emphasis on service-oriented policing in recent reforms, understanding the impact of training on officers’ perceptions is crucial for effective public service delivery. Two interrelated studies (n = 101) were conducted to assess the impact of a training programme on officers’ service orientation perceptions. This study uses a McNemar’s test, logit and ordered logit models, analyzing participants’ self-reported changes in service orientation and communication skills following program completion. The results indicate that participation in the training program significantly improved officers’ perceptions of policing as a service-oriented profession. Furthermore, the perceived enhancement of communication skills positively influenced officers’ service orientation perceptions, suggesting that communication training plays a key role in shaping professional identity. Public agencies should integrate service-oriented training programs to reinforce street-level bureaucrats’ perception of their roles as service providers. Training programs should emphasize communication skill development, as it significantly enhances service orientation. Policymakers should allocate resources to evidence-based training initiatives that improve public service delivery. Police agencies can benefit from adopting a structured, service-focused training model to align policing practices with public expectations. Continuous professional development programs should be implemented to sustain and reinforce service-oriented mindsets over time. This study contributes to the growing body of evidence-based research on public worker training by demonstrating the effectiveness of targeted training programs in fostering a service-oriented mindset among officers. The findings provide practical insights for policymakers and public sector leaders seeking to enhance public service delivery through professional development initiatives.
