Global News (Canada) 23/5/2025 News Beyond the Lens: Integrating Interdisciplinary Expertise for Enhanced Knowledge Discovery from Police Body-Worn Camera Footage Police body-worn cameras (BWCs), once limited to evidence collection, have evolved into powerful digital tools for real-time analysis of police behavior and community interactions. We propose a novel interdisciplinary strategy designed to leverage the full capabilities of BWCs by placing equal value on the social and mathematical sciences. By fusing social science frameworks such as Systematic Social Observation (SSO) and Social Interactionist Theory (SIT) with cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) techniques—computer vision (CV), natural language processing (NLP), and machine learning (ML)—we offer a robust lens into police-civilian encounters that ensures accuracy, transparency, and explainability in our findings. This interdisciplinary approach transforms how knowledge is extracted and interpreted from BWC footage. Our goal is to detect, recognize, classify, and analyze patterns in BWC footage to provide actionable recommendations to assist in maturing police training initiatives while enhancing trust and safety within communities. We propose a methodological framework that combines advanced technological tools with profound contextual understanding to promote a practical approach for law enforcement while advancing the frontiers of knowledge discovery from police BWCs. This study introduces a new approach, the Need for Patrol Presence Score (NPPS), to guide the design of patrol beat borders and coverage areas. Unlike traditional models, NPPS incorporates evidence-based policing by considering call types, urgency, and high-risk locations. Using Computer-Assisted Dispatch data, this method aims to create balanced patrol beats that can improve response times and workload distribution across the patrol beats. Implementation of NPPS can enhance police response, workload distribution, and community safety, providing a valuable tool for police departments seeking efficient patrol beat structures.
