Analysis of industry data finds that (1) theft of vehicles with electronic immobilizers declined 80% relative to a matched control group, (2) theft of new secure vehicles declined before older vehicles, (3) theft declined gradually over the years as secure vehicles permeated the national fleet, and (4) the decline was further prolonged, and remains ongoing, as manufacturers responded to offender effort to circumvent security. The study concludes that the electronic vehicle immobilizer caused the great American car crime decline, and that if this prompted declining crime more generally, it may be the most important crime prevention device of recent history.
