Irish Legal News (Republic of Ireland) 16/10/2024 News The Impact of Training on Use of Force by Police in an English police force; Evidence from a Pragmatic Stepped Wedge Randomised Controlled Trial We aim to test the impact of a new national curriculum for public and personal safety training (PPST) developed by the College of Policing, which aims to reduce the use of force by police. We conduct a large-scale Stepped Wedge Pragmatic Controlled Trial with a single police force and 1843 participating police officers. Officers were assigned to be trained during a particular week of the year. We find statistically significant reductions in the use of force by police officers as a result of the training. These effects are a reduction of between 8.0% and 10.9% in the propensity to use force in a given week compared to the counterfactual. The effect is accompanied by a significant reduction in the likelihood of injury to civilians, and no rise in the risk of harm to officers. We conclude that the PPST curriculum appears effective at reducing use of force by police in a large scale, robust trial Justice Evaluation Journal 16/10/2024 Research article Sudbury police to begin phasing in body-worn cameras with 30 in January CANADA: A full deployment of body-worn cameras among Greater Sudbury Police Service members is slated to take place one year later, by January 2026 Bay Today (Canada) 16/10/2024 News Police fear explosion in home-made guns poses huge threat to public safety AUSTRALIA: Police warn the number of home-made firearms being seized across Australia is growing exponentially, and DIY weapons pose the most significant emerging threat to public safety. The purpose of this paper is to explore RSOs views of the home visit and risk assessment and to make recommendations to MOSOVO to improve future home visit & risk assessment practice. Design/methodology/approach: This study aimed to examine a sample of adult male RSOs’ views of the risk assessment and home visit process. Three police forces in England and Wales agreed to facilitate the sampling of 10 RSOs who varied in their level of risk, namely, low, medium, high and very high. Findings: Three themes were developed from the analysis: anxiety and shame; perceptions of the first home visit; and the property search and observations. This paper discusses these experiences in light of the growing call for MOSOVOs to both manage risk and assist desistance and present recommendations for improving both the home visit and risk assessment practice. Originality/value: To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study to understand and explore RSOs views of the home visit and risk assessment process.
