The available national data documents a recent increase in this group exhibiting offending behaviours and having contact with police, relative to boys. Observed increases in police involvement among girls, relative to boys, suggests that current practices are failing to account for their gendered needs. There is limited contemporary research pertaining to girls’ involvement with offending behaviour, police and youth justice, and existing seminal texts are somewhat outdated. The importance of understanding girls’ unique pathways to offending behaviours is crucial for informing policy and practice. This paper adopts a feminist criminological lens to examine the research about offending and justice system involvement of girls, and it applies the concept of intersectionality to investigate the unique experiences of Indigenous girls in these contexts. This paper found that girls hold unique characteristics, risk factors and needs relative to boys, and current youth justice practices are failing to accommodate for this specificity. The lack of tailored responses and available gender specific programmes for girls involved with offending and the justice system constitutes a key policy and practice gap in Australia.
