Tony Blair Institute for Global Change 18/8/2025 News Male victims experiences with seeking help from domestic violence agencies over time and across western English-speaking countries Background: Male victims of intimate partner violence (IPV) represent a substantial but overlooked portion of IPV victims. Access to domestic violence (DV) services remains a challenge, particularly when agencies primarily serve female victims. This study examines male IPV victims’ experiences with mainstream and specialized DV agencies across four English-speaking regions: the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom/Ireland, and Australia/New Zealand. Methods: Two samples of male IPV victims from Western English-speaking countries/regions were recruited: one consisting of self-identified male IPV victims (n = 594) and the other of male IPV victims from crowdsourcing sample (n = 1380). Participants completed an anonymous online questionnaire, and among other issues, reported on their help-seeking from DV agencies, specific experiences with DV agencies, and perceived helpfulness of the DV agencies’ services. Results: Men from the victims sample were significantly more likely to seek help compared to male IPV victims from the crowdsourcing sample. Specialized DV agencies were rated as more helpful than mainstream agencies. USA respondents reported the most positive experiences, while those from other regions, particularly Canada and the UK/Ireland, reported negative encounters. Conclusions: Findings highlight the need for improved, gender-inclusive training and resources within mainstream DV agencies, as well as increased support and expansion of specialized services for male IPV victims. Policymakers and service providers must address the systematic gaps in support to ensure male victims are recognized and effectively helped across all regions. CRIMRXIV 18/8/2025 Research article Risk and Public Judgments on Police Pursuits: A Nationally Representative Conjoint Experiment Police vehicle pursuits highlight a central tension between law enforcement imperatives and public safety. While modern policies emphasize balancing apprehension needs against risks of continuation, little is known about whether public intuitions mirror this framework. We address this gap using a nationally representative conjoint experiment (N = 3,334) that varied eleven contextual factors across randomized pursuit scenarios. Respondents rated perceived risk, indicated whether pursuits should be terminated, and made forced-choice tradeoffs. Across all outcomes, high-risk situational factors (e.g., high speeds, adverse weather, heavy traffic, urban settings, etc.) increased perceived danger and termination support, while more serious underlying offenses, particularly violent felonies, reduced it. These patterns align with the proportional balancing logic embedded in contemporary policy and training. Findings suggest restrictive, risk-sensitive pursuit policies are broadly consistent with public expectations, though tolerance for risk in violent felony cases may limit support for outright prohibitions. CRIMRXIV 18/8/2025 Research article Integrating safety, order and duty of care in public space foot patrols This policy-focused paper reviews established and emerging studies on policing-based foot patrols in public places, addressing the question of how to utilise policing-oriented services to better manage problems of crime and disorder in public places. The study identified a limited traditional model of patrols and recommends an enhanced model which integrates the work of diverse providers to meet overlapping aims of crime prevention, public order, reassurance and wellbeing. The paper begins by reviewing the evolution of police patrols away from pedestrian beats through mobile patrols to private security patrols. It then examines available studies on public preferences, multi-modal co-response formats, and studies on impacts – illustrated with international case studies. These sources support the idea of reconfiguring traditional enforcement-focused patrols to include a strong welfare orientation to address common public space challenges – including substance abuse, mental illness and homelessness – along with broader quality-of-life challenges.
