Home Office 17/12/2024 News Police helicopter units: an aerial view of an understudied police unit Many police agencies – especially large police agencies – employ helicopter units as part of their operations. Helicopter units exhibit the potential to impact an array of policing outcomes, including efficiency and effectiveness. Helicopter units, however, have received only scant attention among scholarly literature. Drawing upon data from two different police agencies in the U.S.A., I provide an empirical snapshot of helicopter units as they operate in frontline policing. My analyses reveal that helicopter units engage in a variety of different activities, most of which are related to crime control, and contribute to a variety of different policing outputs, such as arrests and recoveries of stolen vehicles. My analyses also reveal that approximately half of calls for service handled by helicopter units are classified as crime-specific call-types and that helicopter units are generally quick to arrive at calls once dispatched. I discuss my findings with respect to both policing research and policing practice. I also use my findings to call for future research regarding the use of helicopter units in contemporary policing. This study examines whether the video’s release influenced arrest and traffic stop rates in Chicago. It adds to the existing depolicing literature through its focus on the CPD’s specialized units contrasted with officers assigned to patrol. The results indicate that arrest rates decreased significantly after the video was released, but only for officers assigned to specialized units. The video release had no significant impact on traffic stop rates. Additional analyses demonstrate that the significant reductions in arrest rates for specialized units were somewhat more pronounced in police districts with less than a majority of Black residents. Crime and Delinquency - Subscription at source 17/12/2024 Research article The Addition and Expansion of Demographic Characteristics in the NCVS One of the advantages of the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) is that it is a large-scale data collection that allows data to be analyzed on various subpopulations. Since the survey’s inception, there have been changes to the population, law, and areas of public interest. In July of 2016, questions were added to the NCVS on citizenship, veteran status, sexual orientation, and gender identity. In addition, changes were made to existing questions on disability status and household income. This allowed for analysis of criminal victimization against more demographic groups. This article discusses these changes and provides estimates of violent victimization by these demographic characteristics.
