I’m stating that somewhat confidently because if he had understood the case he was commenting on, his remarks would be even more outrageous. I’m trying to give him the benefit of the doubt but “We are no doing this anymore” in response to an article highlighting a case where even the police force involved admitted they got it wrong, was a real low point for me. BBC 20/9/2025 News Policing Fit for the Future The challenges facing policing in Britain have never been more complex, yet the system is stuck in the past and at crisis point. Years of the Conservatives ineffective resourcing and mismanagement of our policing service have left communities feeling abandoned in the face of crime and anti-social behaviour. That, coupled with huge court backlogs, denying victims justice, undermining public confidence and allowing too many criminals to get away with it, means trust between the police and the public has been eroded. We believe Britain deserves better - a modern, joined-up policing system that prevents crime, delivers justice swiftly, and restores public confidence. That means smarter use of technology, proper investment in people, and targeted action to keep every community safe. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with survivors and professionals involved in the delivery of the intervention. Transcripts were analysed separately using reflexive thematic analysis before data from the two groups were triangulated. Seven survivors and twelve professionals took part. Two themes were generated: experiences and outcomes from cases reported, and types and forms of support offered to survivors. Professionals also commented on the benefits of having additional people reviewing cases. Findings demonstrated positive collaborative working in a co-located setup and perceived improvements in survivor experiences and outcomes. BBC 19/9/2025 News Evidence-based review of Thames Valley Police tactical bicycle deployments in public order policing This paper explores how an English police force (Thames Valley Police) deploy bicycles within public order policing environments. Using a convergent mixed methods approach, the study combines Freedom of Information (FOI) requests, interviews, and observations of police operations. Typically, foot resources are utilised in Public Order Public Safety (POPS) policing, but FOI data shows that Thames Valley Police (TVP) are pioneering tactical cycles in England. Through interviews with key TVP officers (n = 3) managing tactical cycles, and observations of POPS policing operations, this research highlights the evidence base for further utilisation of tactical cycles. Based on participant perspectives, tactical cycles may reduce overall resource burden, increase efficiency, improve environmental friendliness, increase police visibility, and enhance the legitimacy of police deployments. There are logistical complexities and officer welfare considerations that forces need to account for if they implement tactical cycles within their existing POPS resources. The College of Policing should write formal guidance into Authorised Professional Practice to aid police forces in England and Wales to adopt tactical cycles within POPS policing.
