In this study, we ask parents and caregivers of autistic individuals about what the police should and shouldn’t do during interactions with autistic individuals. Using survey data aimed at understanding police encounters with autistics, we conducted Biterm Topic Models with qualitative thematic coding of open-ended questions asking about police behavior when interacting with autistic individuals. Parents and caregivers provided actionable advice for the police: slow the interaction, use a calm voice, avoid pressuring individuals to respond, and minimize sensory inputs. Respondents suggested that the police may bring stereotypes of autism to interactions. Respondents preferred the police to take an equity-over-equality approach, highlighting the need to grapple with reconceptualizing core policing ideas, like suspicion and resistance, and acknowledge that policing is deeply situated within neurotypicality standards.
