Those cases which are reported by victims are investigated by the Jamaica Constabulary Force’s Centre for Sexual Offences and Child Abuse (CISOCA). Whilst improvements have been noted in recent years, human rights organisations have highlighted on-going limitations of such investigations and the effective interviewing of victims. Despite this, a paucity of relevant research has prevented the development of empirically driven training aimed at supporting practitioners to deal with everyday challenges while interviewing vulnerable victims in Jamaica. Consequently, the present study sought to assess the challenges involved in interviewing victims of sexual offences in Jamaica and the cultural factors that may underline them. In-depth, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 41 police interviewers using thematic analysis to interpret the data. Analysis showed that organisational challenges such as training, expertise and capacity deficiencies, and early mishandlings with victims were detrimental to the quality of the interviews conducted. Policing and Society - Registration at source 16/8/2018 Research article Driving As An Under-Acknowledged Risk in Rural Policing One topic rarely discussed in the policing literature is driving-related accidents, injuries, and deaths, despite the fact that, for example, such deaths vastly outnumber gun-related fatalities for officers on active duty. There is even less literature on automobile-related incidents and deaths in relation to rural policing. Based on 14 focus groups with police officers (n = 49) across a primarily rural Canadian province, we probe the various driving-related risks faced by these officers. Drawing from the literature on automobility, we examine the various aspects of driving that place officers at risk of fatality. We highlight the driving-related occupational risks specific to rural policing and how such risks inhibit their ability to conduct their jobs safely and effectively. We conclude with policy implications and avenues for future research. Recent events have raised concern about whether UK police body armour and associated personal protective equipment (PPE) provides protection from military threats such as improvised explosive devices (IED) and grenades. In this paper PPE worn by specialised police officers was assessed for its protective performance from a specified grenade threat. The major cause of injury suffered by police officers challenged by a modern military grenade would be from the associated fragmentation which perforated coveralls, boots, helmet and soft body armour, but not hard armour plates.
