This study investigates how explicit development of critical thinking affects leadership understanding and practice among these groups. Employing a qualitative case study design, data were collected through focus groups and semi-structured interviews with participants in the Australian Institute of Police Management’s Graduate Diploma of Executive Leadership. Thematic analysis, utilising NVivo software and triangulated across data sources, was used to identify patterns in participants’ responses. Findings suggest that critical thinking education invites more reflective decision-making, systems awareness, collaborative communication, and key characteristics of critical thinkers such as intellectual humility, curiosity, and autonomy. As participants shifted towards inclusive, future-oriented, and strategic discussions of leadership, the value of calculated risk-taking and the need for organisational change came to the fore. More research is needed into the translation of critical thinking education into organisational practice.
