BBC 8/11/2025 News From the beat to the tweet: the use of Twitter (X) by police officers Purpose: The police regularly incorporate social media into their outreach portfolios. Although much social media is handled at the organizational-level, some police officers also use social media in a professional capacity at the individual-level. Little research, however, has examined how individual police officers engage with social media. As part of the present research, we explored how individual police officers use Twitter (now named X): a popular microblogging platform. Design/methodology/approach: We constructed a dataset of police officers who use Twitter in a professional capacity at the individual-level. We then extracted and coded tweets from the public accounts of such officers to analyze their characteristics. We also examined potential differences in Twitter use by officer gender, officer rank, and frequency of posting. Findings: Our analyses revealed that individual police officers largely use Twitter to push content rather than pull information or network, mirroring organizational-level trends. Our analyses also revealed some differences in posting practices as a function of officer characteristics. Originality/value: Most previous research regarding social media in policing has examined police social media practices at the organizational-level. For our research, we explored police social media practices at the individual-level – assessing the characteristics of police officers who use Twitter in a professional capacity as well as the characteristics of their tweets. The Guardian 8/11/2025 News Reducing Crime on London Buses: A Randomised Controlled Trial on Moving Hotspots Objectives: This study assesses the effectiveness of hotspots policing in a novel context – moving hotspots. We examine the impact of preventative police presence on high-crime-harm bus routes, known as ‘Hot Bus Corridors’. Methods: A pretest-post-test parallel groups randomised controlled trial (RCT) was conducted in , UK, involving 556 ‘Hot Bus Corridors’ that were randomly assigned to receive either targeted visibility presence on buses or standard police presence, which served as the control group. Generalised linear models were used to estimate the treatment effect on crime levels, measured in terms of both crime counts and the Cambridge Crime Harm Index (CCHI). Results: We observed a significant reduction in both crime counts and crime harm in the treatment bus corridors compared to the control corridors, with a more pronounced reduction during morning hours. Conclusion: This study extends the applicability of hotspots policing to mobile environments, demonstrating its potential to enhance public safety. High-visibility police patrols in moving hotspots can increase deterrence and, consequently, effectively reduce crime within the public transportation network. Police Quarterly 7/11/2025 Research article Toward a Comprehensive Model of Police Training: A Longitudinal Study Examining Predictors of Officers’ Training Motivation, Receptivity, and Outcomes The literature on “what works” in police training is quickly growing. As we build this evidence base, it is important to not only examine whether a training program works but also develop a better understanding of how and why it works (or fails). Our paper builds on the theoretical framework of officer training motivation and receptivity by addressing several gaps in the existing literature and proposes an analytical model for training evaluation. We conducted a longitudinal police training evaluation by exploring different factors that may motivate officers to complete training, which, in turn, may impact their training receptivity and, ultimately, training outcomes. A sample of 351 newly hired Korean police officers participated in online surveys conducted at two time periods. The results demonstrate several factors are important predictors of training motivation, receptivity, and outcomes, offering empirical insights that can inform police agencies in designing and implementing more effective training programs.
