BBC 18/11/2025 News Promoting physical and mental wellness in police: insights from sworn and civilian personnel Preservation of community safety is inextricably tied to police personnel wellbeing. When considering that an alarming number of police personnel are experiencing serious health impairments, a pressing need emerges to address this issue. In response, the current study conducted semi-structured interviews with (n = 18) sworn and (n = 8) civilian police personnel from a Mid-Atlantic police department to acquire insight into the health services they need. Thematic analysis of interview data produced several key themes related to police health. These included considerations for: 1) improved physical fitness, 2) improved nutrition and wellness, 3) the construction of a built environment inside police agencies to promote police wellbeing, 4) active agency assistance, 5) peer support, and 6) the integration of clinical therapy into police departments. Findings contribute to the development of necessary health interventions that can optimize police personnel’s ability to fulfill their important service-provider functions. Police Practice and Research 18/11/2025 Research article How assaults against police officers unfold : identifying incident scenarios using latent class and latent transition analysis This study aims to identify incident profiles within cases of assaults against police officers by examining how multiple suspect, officer, and situational correlates combine into distinct assault scenarios. Using 633 police case files of assaults against police officers from three police districts in Brussels, Belgium, we apply latent class analysis (LCA) and latent transition analysis (LTA) to identify and connect assault profiles at two stages: Dispatch precursors before officers arrive on-scene, and police-citizen interactions that unfold only as officers arrive on-scene. Results reveal two dispatch precursor profiles: Violent residential interventions with teams including at least one female officer, and nonviolent outdoor interventions involving male officers. Results identify three on-scene interaction profiles: Intoxicated verbal escalation, immediate escalation, and escalation to evade police. Further, findings show that violent residential interventions with teams including at least one female officer generally follow an immediate escalation, whereas the escalation of nonviolent outdoor interventions with male officers is more difficult to predict. Prior work focuses on what factors make assaults against police officers more likely to happen. We build on existing research by focusing on how combinations of such factors create various assault scenarios and emphasize that assaults against police officers can be understood as a dynamic interplay between three essential components related to the suspect, the officer(s), and the situation. In doing so, we apply the Criminal Event Perspective to assaults against police officers. CRIMRXIV 18/11/2025 Research article Ransomware targeting individuals and small businesses: Vulnerabilities and impacts AUSTRALIA: This study examines the experiences of 331 Australian individuals and small to medium enterprise (SME) owners who were victims of ransomware. We used survey data to understand how they were targeted and the vulnerabilities that were exploited in private and work-related settings. Most ransomware victims had received multiple ransom messages in the past 12 months. SME owners were more likely to have received multiple messages and to have previously paid a ransom. Strong messaging should dissuade SME owners from making these payments, which increase the chances of repeat victimisation. SME owners reported impacts on many devices. The affected devices were also more likely to have been a work-issued device or a personal device used for work. SME owners were also more likely than other victims to report that the ransomware had spread to other workplace devices, systems or email accounts. The results highlight both the human element in victimisation and the need for technological solutions to protect business owners from ransomware and its harmful effects.
