The Guardian 29/11/2019 News Mindfulness Training Reduces PTSD Symptoms and Improves Stress-Related Health Outcomes in Police Officers Law enforcement officers are regularly exposed directly and indirectly to a wide variety of traumatic stressors, which take place against a backdrop of high levels of organizational stressors. Consequently, this group is at elevated risk for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other negative physical and mental health outcomes, yet there are few empirically supported interventions to proactively mitigate the effects of occupational stress for this population. Recent studies suggest that training in mindfulness meditation may reduce perceived stress and improve related physical and mental health outcomes in this group. We sought to demonstrate feasibility, acceptability, and adherence for an 8-week mindfulness training program in 30 officers from a mid-sized, Midwestern US police department, replicate findings of improved stress-related health outcomes, and provide novel evidence for reduced PTSD symptoms. Police Professional 29/11/2019 News Punitive Attitudes and Victimization Among Police Officers in Switzerland: An Empirical Exploration Policework involves a high level of risk, and police officers are frequently victimized while on duty. However, victimization rates differ considerably within the police corps and depend on a number of personal and situational variables. This research is based on a survey of police officers in the canton of St. Gallen, Switzerland (N = 478). It follows two research paths to investigate the link between punitive attitudes and victimization experiences: punitiveness as a factor in higher victimization rates, and victimization experiences causing an increase in punitive attitudes. The results showed no significant difference between male and female officers in terms of punitiveness, and that punitiveness significantly increased with age. Also, punitiveness was found to decrease as the hours spent on street patrol duty increased. Examining the link between victimization and punitiveness, this study also found a surprising effect that officers without victimization experiences in the three years prior to the survey showed significantly higher levels of punitiveness than their victimized colleagues. Police Practice and Research - Registration at source 29/11/2019 Research article Police Officers’ Perceptions of Specialist Training, Skills and Qualities Needed to Investigate Sexual Crime This study explored police officers’ perceptions of specialist training for sexual offence investigations, as well as the skills and qualities needed to investigate sexual crime. The sample included 41 Australian police officers who completed anonymous questionnaires before, immediately after, and 9–12 months following a 4-week intensive course that focused on the Whole Story framework for conducting sexual offence investigations. Results indicated that the training changed officers’ perceptions to be more consistent with the information learned in the specialist course. Following training, officers placed greater importance on the specialist nature of sexual offence investigations, the specialist nature of interviewing adults and children, and evidence about the relationship between the suspect and the victim. Empathy, good communication, and open-mindedness were deemed to be particularly important attributes for investigating sexual crime. Potential implications for police forces and trainers are discussed, along with suggestions for future research.
