The Sun 19/4/2020 News Shared Practice, Learning, and Goals Between Police and Young People: A Qualitative Analysis of the National Volunteer Police Cadets Engaging all members of the public is of paramount importance to British policing. This assists with demystifying the role of police in society, and also providing a shared vision and partnership between communities and the criminal justice system. The National VPC programme provides the opportunity to achieve this, recruiting diverse young people into a structured programme led by a range of police officers and staff. A series of focus groups were conducted across the country with both cadets and adult leaders to explore the benefits of the cadet programme for both groups—those relevant to policing but also more widely for community cohesion and individual development. Although the benefits to policing were clearly articulated, a range of strengths to the programme were also identified. Policing: A Journal of Policy and Practice - Registration at source 19/4/2020 Research article Using Structural Equation Modeling to Explore the Role of Early Strain on Later Stress Responses and Aggression By Police Officers Policing is frequently identified as one of the most stressful professions and police officers are often exposed to dangerous situations and traumatic experiences on the job. Exposure to these traumatic experiences, also referred to as critical incidents, may negatively influence the psychological and physiological wellbeing of officers. In extreme cases, these negative reactions can result in deviant and criminal behavior fitting within the theoretical conceptions of General Strain Theory (GST). Few studies have explored the role of prior trauma experiences on officers’ negative stress and behavioral outcomes. This research examines the influence of child abuse and inter-parental violence on officer psychological-physiological stress responses and officer-on-officer aggression. Using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) and data from the Police Stress and Domestic Violence in Police Families in Baltimore, Maryland, the results indicate that emotional responses to critical incidents and prior childhood exposure to abuse and violence influence negative stress responses and use of violence by officers. The results showed that there is a very close relationship between police stops and motorists observed on the road. In six of the nine locations there was a non-significant difference between the race of the motorists observed and the race of those stopped. In two locations black motorists were stopped less frequently than all other races, and in one location black motorists were stopped more frequently than all other races. The study argues that census based estimates for driving population are not valid and should be eliminated from evaluating police behavior. [pdf] Edmonton Police Commission (Canada) 19/4/2020 Report What lockdown? It’s business as usual for drug traffickers On Tuesday this week border control cops stopped a van with a shipment of face masks coming through the Channel Tunnel. When they checked the masks they found almost £1 million worth of cocaine tucked in among them. It was a similar story a week earlier. A man called Benjamin Evans was pulled over by the Welsh police on the A40 Brecon bypass. Evans claimed he was a key worker but when the cops searched his car, they discovered nearly £60,000 worth of cocaine. ‘Possession of drugs with intent to supply does not qualify as essential work,’ said the arresting officer. There have been reports recently of a fall in the demand for ‘party drugs’ like cocaine, and of course lockdown has meant a few glitches in the usual supply chains — speed bumps, let’s call them — but the lesson of the face mask shipment and Evans the key worker is that by and large the drug trade remains remarkably unbothered by the Covid crisis.
