Sunday World (Republic of Ireland) 17/3/2025 News Police-Led Interventions for Deterring Organized Crime: A UK Cluster Randomized Trial Targeting Criminal Network Recruiting and Its Vicarious Effects on Co-Offenders Many United States law enforcement agencies have integrated their crime intelligence and technological capabilities into various ‘centers,’ including fusion centers, crime gun intelligence centers (CGICs), real-time crime centers (RTCCs), and crime information centers (CICs). Yet, despite their rapid diffusion, there is little understanding about the implementation, operations, and efficacy of these centers. This scoping review aims to systematize research on these four center types and identify knowledge gaps. We identified and reviewed 34 studies across 41 academic publications and gray literature. While most studies were methodologically limited, some evidence suggests that CGICs, RTCCs, and CICs can improve criminal investigations of violent crimes, with less information on their ability to prevent crime. There have also been no rigorous evaluations of fusion centers, despite comprising the largest share of studies in our review. We discuss the implications for practice and provide a roadmap for future scholarship. The HCSO SPI was designed to address repeat call for service (CFS) hot spots using a holistic strategy. A matched pair randomized controlled trial evaluation of 13 treatment hot spots and 13 control hot spots was performed. Directed patrols documented via CAD, line-level supervisors’ implementation reports, and interviews with 5 key informants suggested implementation fidelity varied across sites. For implementation Year 1, crime-related CFS were down about 23% (991 to 759) in the 13 treatment hot spots compared the year before implementation started relative to a 16% (740 to 619) reduction in the 13 control hot spots. For implementation Year 2, crime-related CFS were down by about 28% (991 to 710) in the 13 treatment hot spots compared the year before implementation started relative to about a 17% (740 to 616) reduction in the 13 control hot spots. There is very little known about how children and their families experience this process and whether current practices are meeting their needs. This study seeks to understand these experiences by undertaking a thematic analysis of in-depth interviews with 10 children/young people (aged between 4 and 16) and 8 mothers (n = 18). The study draws on constructivist grounded theory methodology and incorporates the contextual-embedded perspective of the clinician/researcher. The study identified three stages participants navigated in the hours following the assault: (a) reaching out for help, (b) hospital processes and procedures, and (c) discharge. Nested within these stages, five key themes emerged: confusion, distress, and minimization when reporting; valuing a caring presence; feeling exposed, vulnerable, and ashamed; being lost in space and time; and going home alone. The need for a sensitive, trauma-informed, accessible, and consistent response to acute sexual assault is discussed; one that acknowledges the experiences and centralizes the priorities and psychosocial needs of the child and their family.
