Based on survey data collected from 1,253 police officers, this study comparatively analyzes whether supervisory treatment of officers is predictive of trust in citizens and willingness to follow agency policies, which in turn is linked to their willingness to act fairly and justly toward citizens on the street. The results indicate that officer trust in citizens mediates the relationship between internal and external procedural justice in both China and Taiwan, but compliance with agency policies does not. Internal procedural justice directly predicts external procedural justice among Taiwanese officers, but such a connection is not found among Chinese officers. Implications for future research and policy are discussed. Low job satisfaction may result in poor organizational commitment, unsatisfactory job performance, and absenteeism. Job satisfaction is impacted by demographic factors and characteristics of the work environment. Analyzing survey data of 6,041 police officers, the study finds that while demographic factors and job characteristics impact job satisfaction, organizational characteristics have the greatest influence. The study illuminates the similarities and differences in organizational dynamics impacting job satisfaction in police organizations in India and other countries and underlines the relevance of the theory across countries and cultures. International Criminal Justice Review 31/7/2020 Research article A Conditional Likelihood Model of the Relationship Between Officer Features and Rounds Discharged in Police Shootings We match officers on the scene of a shooting incident and develop a conditional truncated Poisson model that eliminates confounding due to time, place, and environment. We use a permutation test to formally assess the strength of the relationship between officer features and shooting rate. We find no officer feature strongly predicts shooting rate. Age at recruitment, age at the time of the shooting, and years of experience all had relative rates nearly equal to 1.0. There was no statistical relationship with an officer being female (p = 0.27), black (p = 0.64), or Hispanic (p = 0.39). Having prior involvement in shootings, prior force complaints, and special assignments appear to elevate the relative rate of shooting, but all confidence intervals included 1.0. Officer features appear to have little or no relationship with shooting rate. These findings correspond with police scholars’ supposition that duty assignment may be more responsible for explaining differences in police use of force than individual officer characteristics. It contrasts with some prior research suggesting that officer race, age at recruitment, and prior performance affect shooting risk.
