The Guardian 27/7/2021 News Experience Is Not Enough: Self-Identified Training Needs of Police Working With Adolescents Police receive extensive training due to the complexity and challenges of their work. Surprisingly, most police officers receive minimal training on how to understand and interact with adolescents. The current study included data from 1,030 law enforcement officers from 24 police departments evaluating perceived readiness to interact and work with adolescents in the community. We examined overall training needs, and then tested how experience in law enforcement and position or rank impacted self-identified training needs. Rank was associated with police officer perceptions of adolescents and related training needs. Compared with patrol officers, school resource officers indicated that they believed they had the skills needed to effectively work with adolescents [P = 0.001, odds ration (OR) = 2.5]. Beat or area patrol officers were significantly less likely than school resource officers to report feeling equipped to work with adolescents who have experienced trauma compared with new recruits (P < 0.001, OR = 0.3) and other non-patrol police officers (P = 0.001, OR = 0.6). Policing: A Journal of Policy and Practice 27/7/2021 Research article Organizational Culture, Stress, and Coping Strategies in the Police: An Empirical Investigation This paper investigates the relationships between organizational culture, stress, and coping strategies in police organizations. In an online survey, 152 German police officers described their workgroups in terms of stressors (e.g. overtime demands, traumatic events), coping strategies (e.g. exercising, drinking alcohol), and shared values (e.g. masculinity, solidarity). Multiple regression models were tested to examine a) the effect of stress on police culture and b) the effect of stress and police culture on coping. Conservative-male culture is stronger in workgroups with high operational stress. Predictors of maladaptive coping are organizational stress and conservative-male culture. Diligence culture is negatively associated with maladaptive coping. Overall, the study indicates that police culture depends on the composition and stress level of a workgroup and influences the way officers cope with stress. The main limitation of the study is the unclear direction of causality. However, our findings have important implications for leadership and psychological intervention within the police. Police Practice and Research - Registration at source 27/7/2021 Research article Do Perceptions Become Reality? Exploring Principals’ Perceptions, Schools’ SRO/police Presence, and Student Discipline Reporting Policies While recent scholarship generally emphasizes how public school principals’ perceptions influence various school safety practices, far less is understood about how principals’ perceptions of school crime risk and academic climate informs schools’ decisions on specific school safety outcomes, including a school’s SRO/police presence and policies on whether to report student disciplinary incidents to law enforcement agencies. Using data drawn from the 2017–18 School Survey on Crime and Safety and 2,500 public schools in the United States, this study examines these questions. The results make clear that the influence of principals’ perceptions vary across different school safety outcomes. Equally important is that the variation appears to be nonrandom. While the uneven salience of principals’ perceptions does not necessarily dilute their importance to school policies, it does underscore the need for a more granular accounting and understanding of how various important school-level safety outcomes arise.
