Effective organisational strategies for the management of this mental health risk have been the subject of research and some have been implemented in police organisations. This study aims to identify the experiences, needs and expectations of police officers in terms of post-incident interventions following exposure to a PTE. In a mixed-methods design, we first conducted a survey in 107 police officers from four different Belgian police units to determine trauma exposure and evaluate past experiences with three commonly used post-incident interventions: individual counselling, operational debriefing and psychological debriefing. We then conducted focus groups with 13 of the trauma-exposed police officers to explore the needs and expectations of this population following a PTE. The transcripts were analysed using codebook thematic analysis by human coders, supported by a Large Language Model (LLM). A large majority of 87.9% of participating police officers reported traumatic exposure. Post-incident interventions were not routinely offered following traumatic incidents, and while some interventions were evaluated positively, the current organisational approach does not seem to adequately meet the needs of Belgian police officers. While most police officers felt supported by their colleagues, officers report a lack of support from both their supervisors and the wider police institution. Focus group discussions reveal the need for a well-structured, proactive and comprehensive post-incident approach, addressing psychological, operational and administrative needs of trauma-exposed police officers. Given the role of police culture in discouraging help-seeking, it is vital that police leadership leads efforts to normalize the impact of traumatic events. The findings of the current study indicate that a comprehensive set of post-incident interventions is required to address the needs and expectations of trauma-exposed police personnel.
