Before training, police largely had negative views on youth, but are interested in improving their knowledge and interaction skills with youth. Post-training, police demonstrated significant improvement in their self-skill ratings and acknowledged various behavior-related changes they planned to make when interacting with youth. Patterns in responses also emerged based on officer characteristics. Training appears helpful in changing youth-related knowledge, beliefs, and skills in officers and to match the expectations or desires of officers receiving the training. The results from these training surveys highlight unique opportunities for future investigation and practice, such modifications to training content and delivery, and for policy initiatives, including consistently integrating youth training into police education. Police Practice and Research 12/7/2021 Research article The Influence of Police Treatment and Decision-Making on Perceptions of Procedural Justice: A Field Study This study examines whether police behavior that signals higher quality of treatment or decision-making leads to higher perceived procedural justice. Analyses are based on data collected during police traffic controls of moped drivers in two Dutch cities over a period of six months. Police behavior was measured through systematic social observation (SSO), and data on perceived procedural justice were collected through face-to-face interviews immediately after the encounters. Linear regression analysis with bootstrap estimates was used (n = 218), with an overall perceived procedural justice scale as the dependent variable in all regressions. Independent variables included an overall observed procedural justice index and four separate scales of police treatment and decision-making. We find no evidence that police behavior that signals fairer treatment or decision-making leads to higher perceived procedural justice. Our findings add to the currently very limited empirical evidence on an important question, and raise questions about a central idea, that more procedurally just treatment and decision making by authorities leads to an increase in perceived procedural justice and enhanced compliance. The first of these requires more research. Journal of Research in Crime and Delinquency 12/7/2021 Research article Cleansing and Corridors: Assessing the State (and Future) of Police Human Source Management in Australia Human source management (HSM) is an area of policing that is fraught with ethical and legal risks, and yet until relatively recently has received limited attention in policing literature. This article explores several areas critical to HSM in Australian policing, albeit with global implications. It explores the potential risks of creating arbitrary definitional distinctions in the registration of informants. It also explores the implementation of ‘sterile corridor’ policies separating source handling from operational police, as well as why some police services continue to reject the need for specialist HSM units. Finally, the article looks to the contentious legislative framework around ‘cleansing’ informants before using them as witnesses, requiring them to confess to all criminality (minor or major) before being offered a ‘deal’ by prosecutors. It questions whether this is the future for HSM reform in Australia, and whether or not this is a positive move forward on the road to professionalisation.
