Policing Insight - Subscription at source 20/7/2021 Analysis, Feature Profiling Persons Reported Missing From Hospitals Versus Mental Health Facilities Missing person reports from hospitals and mental health facilities are a significant issue impacting patients, communities, and health and police sectors. Research on missing persons seldom considers the type of location from where people go missing, which can be troublesome due to the increased chances for experiencing harm during an episode from hospitals and mental health facilities. When location type is studied, these often remarkably different places are frequently blended together in analyses and discussions. This conflation has implications for research and the development of effective police preventive responses. To begin to address this gap, this study uses descriptive analysis and logistic regression to examine the descriptive and predictive profiles of those reported missing from hospitals versus those reported missing from mental health units. For this, data are taken from a sample of 916 closed missing person cases reported to a Canadian municipal police service over five years. Results suggest there are significant differences in both the descriptive and predictive profiles of individuals reported missing from these two location types, such as individuals with varying mental health and cognitive issues going missing from each place, respectively. Given the findings, the implications for research, policing, and risk management are discussed. Edmonton Journal (Canada) 20/7/2021 News Exploring the Perception of Forensic Science Among Police Investigators in Nigeria: the Role of Sociodemographic Markers Underlining the application of forensic science methods in police investigations is investigators’ perceptions of the methods. The premise is that a positive perception indicates a willingness to apply forensic science in criminal investigations, regardless of prior forensic training. This study compared common sociodemographic markers with regard to perceptions of forensic science application in criminal investigations among investigating police officers in Nigeria, controlling for forensic training. The six sociodemographic markers were: gender, age, marital status, highest educational qualification, rank, and years in service. The survey used a self-administered questionnaire for data collection. Based on a total population of 3771 investigating police officers, a sample size of 347 was determined using Krejcie and Morgan’s formula (Krejcie RV and Morgan DW (1970) Determining sample size for research activities. Educational and Psychological Measurement 30(3): 607–610). A potential 20% dropout rate was added giving a sample size of 416. No difference was found across the sociodemographic markers with regards to the perception of forensic science utilization in criminal investigations (p > .05), except for the highest educational qualification (p = .008) and rank (p = .042) of the respondents. Drawing on empirical evidence from a multi-year study into this phenomenon in Papua New Guinea reveals the ways in which police officer’s relationality both enables and impedes the provision of policing and security in such contexts. Using this as a case study of common concerns across multiple bodies of literature about the relationship between formality and informality and dilemmas of working with a plurality of regulatory actors, the article draws upon complexity science to develop a number of conceptual tools. These include the suggestion of conceptualising policing systems as complex adaptive systems, with police as adaptive agents with multiple relationships constituting shifting identities, and the importance of integrating multiple perspectives. This leads to the development of the notion of the police acting within a relational state that is entwined with a more familiar bureaucratic state Policing and Society - Registration at source 20/7/2021 Research article Government to present proposals to end pay dispute with senior gardaí REPUBLIC OF IRELAND: The Government is due to present proposals soon in a bid to end a pay dispute with senior gardaí which is affecting official plans to roll out policing reforms and the conduct of GSOC investigations.
