BBC 7/4/2025 News Virtual Volunteers: a solution looking for policing problems This operational commentary describes an innovative approach to police volunteering that is currently being piloted in Wales, United Kingdom (UK). The programme, named Virtual Volunteers, is a partnership between students, academics, and administrative staff at the University of South Wales (USW) and Tarian (the Welsh word for ‘shield’), the Regional Organised Crime Unit (ROCU) for the southern Welsh police forces. Students engage in the university intranet to review and answer policing problems posed to them by the ROCU. Such problems include romance fraud, AI-enabled crime, and money laundering. This initiative is untested and while it is currently subject to a number of evaluations it remains in an early developmental stage. The intention here therefore is to record the work that is ongoing, note the progress made in terms of the programme’s development and to recognize its limitations and potential. This commentary will also include some broader insights about the strengths and weaknesses of this form of volunteering. Policing Insight - Subscription at source 7/4/2025 Analysis, Feature, Opinion ‘Some Like it Hot’: exploring crime cold spots, environmental criminology and crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED) Hot spot analysis has been used for many years to identify locations where crime is a concern and where resources can be distributed in a timely and targeted manner. While the hot spot approach focuses attention on preventing what we don’t want (high levels/concentrations of crime and fear of crime), we may be missing insights into why cold spot locations are successful. An in-parallel hot/cold spot approach would also focus on what we do want (safety, amenity, liveability, and resilience). We explore the relatively under-researched area of crime cold spots and advance the concept of a non-binary ‘crime heat spectrum’ that contains and expands hot/cold spots. We also demonstrate how this ‘crime heat spectrum’ can be linked to formal risk management methodology (ISO31000) to help quantify and manage ‘spots’ and better inform crime prevention strategies, planning and crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED). Crime Prevention and Community Safety - Subscription at source 7/4/2025 Research article Regionalized Police Response to Sexual Assault: A Pilot Study High rates of sexual assault continue to harm our communities and survivors choosing not to report to police remain high. To address this persistent problem, and with limited available resources, two adjacent small to medium-sized Colorado police departments partnered on a novel, trauma-informed strategy to improve their response to sexual assault survivors and hold offenders accountable. Borrowing from a successful multi-jurisdictional drug task force model, and shared victim services program, the agencies piloted a regionalized model for sexual assault response combining resources, training, staffing, and space. To understand the Sexual Assault Task Force’s (SATF) efficacy, a mixed methods research project tracked several sexual assault case variables, conducted implementation-focused interviews with detectives and community partners, and conducted an in-depth case review of over 500 sexual assault cases across six years. This article focuses on the results of the case review. Case review scores were analyzed using an interrupted time series model. Results did not show a discontinuous jump in case scores from pre- to post-SATF implementation, however, one agency’s case scores improved significantly and case scores in general trended upwards post-SATF implementation. Community collaborations also increased considerably. Several infrastructure challenges and the COVID-19 pandemic affected the SATF’s progress.
