Police Professional 11/11/2021 News Evidence-Based Offender Profiling of Serial Sex Worker Victim Homicides Three general interlinked areas have been the focus of offender profiling research: individual differentiation (establishing differences between the behavioral actions of crime scene types), behavioral consistency (understanding behavioral patterns across a series of crimes), and offender profiling (linking sub-types of crime scene patterns to the most likely characteristics of an offender). Taken together, these three areas form the empirical basis necessary for use in criminal investigations. However, studies supporting inferences about offender characteristics have to date been the least developed in the field of offender profiling. For profiling to be fully useful to investigations, a clear understanding of three main elements is crucial to fully develop, notably (1) what individual crime scene characteristics are the most salient to use; (2) what elements of the full series behavioral developmental pattern are important to understand as an additional factor; and (3) what offender characteristics are the most empirically robust to focus on for investigative use. The current study examines 80 series of serial homicide, involving 302 crime scenes. Using the key elements of an offender’s crime scene behavioral patterns shown to help link and differentiate crime scenes and series, the current study linked these to sub-sets of different offender characteristics, identified as most useful for investigations. These included such characteristics such as age at the start of the series, criminal history specialization, general history of violence, mental health history, and relationship to the victims in the series. Results are discussed in the context of implications for research and practical applications in serial crime investigation and offender profiling. Journal of Police and Criminal Psychology - Subscription at source 11/11/2021 Research article The Criminal Police Officer: Understanding Factors That Predict Police Crime in the United States Although police decision making and behavior always face intense public scrutiny, officers’ criminal lifestyles have largely been ignored in national debates and discussions. The primary focus of this study was to understand factors that predicted police criminality. To achieve this objective, we analyzed a nationally representative dataset on officers who were arrested from 2005 to 2011 using advanced statistical approaches. Results obtained using multilevel modeling demonstrate the predictive effects of officer and agency characteristics in explaining police criminality. Specifically, findings reveal differences in types of crimes committed by the officers. For example, male officers engage in crimes that are entirely different from those committed by their female counterparts. Likewise, on-duty officers tend to criminally behave differently from their off-duty counterparts. Furthermore, agency-level factors such as type of agency, number of sworn officers, and location of the agency predict police crime. Current findings highlight the importance of policies that would directly address criminality in law enforcement. The Irish Times (Republic of Ireland) 11/11/2021 News Mental Health of Police Trainees During the First Wave of the Covid-19 Pandemic The COVID-19 pandemic took power over the world in 2020. Because of this situation, we surveyed the experiences of the police trainees that they observed in the first two months of the pandemic in Hungary as part of ongoing research in the 2019-2020 school year. They were members of different police departments, and the epidemic-related activities became part of their everyday tasks. In the research, we used a questionnaire that we had prepared. It had 14 questions, and it was a part of our test battery, which examined mental health in a longitudinal study. The inventory was filled in online during the period of their professional examinations (from the end of May to the beginning of June 2020), and we received 28 answered questionnaires about the experience of policing the pandemic. The reason of the low participation rate – 28 answered inventory from approximately 100 people – was probably the impersonal online response, because the earlier data collections were led by the researchers. The results showed that females experienced larger fear related to the health of relatives than males. Their everyday services were influenced significantly by sleeping difficulties and they felt duties more physically overwhelming at this time. The outcomes did not show gender differences in the fields of mental health. Despite some negative influences, the pandemic was not perceived as particularly stressful for police work over the first two months of its eruption. Although the sample was not representative, it could mean a basis for the future research of these questions – especially because the pandemic is more stressful for everyone both mentally and physically at the time of the second and third waves.
