Although older populations are disproportionately victimized through fraudulent online schemes, effective educational interventions, like interactive theatre, have not been utilized to increase crime awareness. This paper describes an explorational research project, analyzing the results of a theatre-based fraud awareness program aimed towards educating victims and their communities about scams targeting older people. The study employs a mixed method research design to examine program impact. In applying multifaceted tools of data collection, such as survey, participant observation, and follow-up interviews, the research team identified program effects, and age-specific appropriateness of the intervention. To close, we synthesized recommendations for program development. Qualitative Criminology 3/3/2025 Research article Evaluations of procedural justice: what drives practitioners’ support for interview procedures? An online experimental survey examined the degree to which 377 international practitioners endorsed procedural justice principles in interviews. Participants were recruited through policing and intelligence agencies in 15 countries in the Asia Pacific and Europe. One section of the survey was administered as a 3 (Coercion: coercive, non-coercive, mixed) x 2 (Crime Harm: high, low) between-subjects experiment to test effects on practitioners’ evaluations of an interview vignette. We predicted that coercion and crime harm would interact to affect procedural evaluations, with tolerance of coercive procedures when the harm caused by a crime was high but not when crime harm was low. We also expected the effect of coercion on procedural evaluations to be mediated primarily by practitioner perceptions that the interview procedure would effectively gather useful information. Counter to these predictions, findings indicated that this sample of experienced practitioners strongly favoured non-coercive interview strategies, and their satisfaction with these procedures was driven equally by perceptions that these procedures were respectful of the detainee and effective in gathering useful information, and less strongly driven by perceptions that the detainee was treated as they deserved. Findings are discussed in terms of their implications for best practice in investigative interviewing. BBC 3/3/2025 News Coercive rehabilitation and therapeutic control: how the police navigate the penal-welfare nexus in Chinese drug governance The recent ‘lenient turn’ in Chinese crime policy has prompted the rise of humanitarianism and the establishment of the rehabilitation ideal in drug governance. Despite rich insights into the workings of drug rehabilitation and its effects on offenders, scarce research has been conducted to address how this broad policy shift affects the exercise of discretion by the police, who are primarily tasked with drug enforcement in China. Using data from an ethnographic project on drug policing in one Chinese city, the present study examines how police make sense of and adapt to the increased policy demand for the rehabilitation of people who use drugs. The analysis reveals that police officers have vigorously interwoven control and care logics into their routine activities surrounding drug control, devising and deploying tactics within the penal-welfare continuum for situational accomplishments of drug rehabilitation. Consequently, their modes of implementation crystallize into forms of coercive rehabilitation and therapeutic control. Research and practice implications for the increased use of police in drug rehabilitation in particular and social problems in general are also discussed.
