Despite this, there is relatively little research about assaults on police – particularly why individuals assault police. This study provides the first comprehensive exploration of the motives behind assaults on police officers in Australia. It examined 170 reports consisting of two coroners reports and 168 court findings of substantiated cases of assaults on police. The findings revealed four key motives: evasive resistance, retaliatory aggression, provoked aggression, and protective confrontation. Each motive reflects distinct offender intentions, moving beyond situational and demographic factors to focus on the underlying reasons for the assaults. The findings show that most assaults are driven by attempts to evade arrest or retaliate against past encounters. Overall, these findings provide insights into the underlying drivers of police assaults to help inform the development of targeted policies and strategies aimed at prevention. By focusing on the root causes and specific circumstances that lead to such incidents, this research contributes to the ongoing efforts to enhance officer safety and reduce the frequency of assaults on police officers. Policing and Society 10/3/2025 Research article Implementing Place Network Investigation Strategies to Reduce Violent Crime Crime in large cities is typically concentrated in small areas and committed by a small number of persons. These concentrations often include criminal networks. Place network investigations (PNI) is a strategy that involves collaborations between police departments and community stakeholders to reduce and prevent crime in these micro-places by using intelligence-driven efforts to uncover and disrupt the criminal networks within these areas. Our team has worked with the Dallas Police Department and other stakeholders in the city to assist them in implementing PNI as a violent crime control measure in tandem with a broader series of violence reduction strategies. In this paper, we introduce the Dallas PNI process. Additionally, we highlight the challenges faced with implementing PNI in Dallas, including obtaining investment and engagement with entities at a PNI site, creating operations plans to disrupt crime in these places, and data collection and management strategies. Finally, we offer suggestions for others who seek to engage in PNI efforts in other locations. Placement on the chronic offender list was based on criteria that were demonstrably predictive of gun offending. Through custom notifications, identified offenders were advised that they were subject to intensified enforcement attention and were offered assistance in accessing services. Partner agencies’ commitment to the strategy was subject to collective review in periodic accountability meetings. We documented strategy implementation over the initial 3.5 years of the initiative by comparing pre- and post-CORE enforcement outputs for CORE offenders against those of a non-equivalent control group. We estimated the preventive impacts of the strategy, finding evidence of individual-level deterrence, in the form of reduced incidence of victimization, among CORE probationers and parolees but not at a statistically significant level among other CORE offenders. Justice Evaluation Journal 10/3/2025 Research article A New Policing Vision for Canada: Modernizing the RCMP CANADA: The safety and security of Canadians is one of the core responsibilities of the Government of Canada. For almost all of its history, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) has been at the forefront of Canada’s efforts to protect its communities, and the distinctive red serge uniform and wide-brimmed Stetsons are icons of Canada, recognizable worldwide. A highly capable and professional policing organization, the RCMP represents Canadian values of service, integrity and respect for the rule of law. As our national police force from coast-to-coast-to-coast, we rely on the RCMP to protect Canada’s borders, defend our national security, manage highly specialized fields like DNA and forensics, protect dignitaries, and deliver effective and efficient front line policing services to eight Provinces and three Territories across 700 detachments, and over 600 Indigenous communities. The RCMP’s extensive range of responsibilities has maintained law and order across Canada for generations. But threats to Canada are rapidly evolving, and demand a targeted response. The digital age and expansion of foreign actor threats challenge traditional policing models and approaches to law enforcement. Canadians are affected daily by growing and complex threats and criminal activities that increasingly extend beyond our borders but have devasting impacts on society, such as the role of organized crime in the spread of fentanyl. Important critical infrastructure is regularly and systematically targeted by complex cyber-attacks, stealing data and affecting the delivery of services that Canadians rely on. We’re witnessing advances in technology that have facilitated more sophisticated methods of committing and concealing these crimes, from using encrypted communications for illegal transactions to employing high tech tools for vehicle theft. And we are now seeing RCMP resources pushed to do more to secure our borders. Canadians expect to rely on a modern, focused, highly specialized policing function in a rapidly changing world. After reflecting on the challenges and evolution required, the Government is setting out a new vision to support an effective approach to policing for Canadians.
