A majority (> 50%) of respondents endorsed “Agree with No Reservation” for all but two of the proposed guidelines, while at least 75% of participants endorsed every item with either “Agree with No Reservation” or “Agree with Some Reservation” with an average combined agreement of 91.6%. There were only two proposed guidelines where those psychologists who disagreed represented over 19% of all respondents, though neither were higher than 25%. These two included Item 11, which proposed a definition for non-confidential mental health evaluations, and Item 12, which suggested non-confidential mental health evaluations should not be conducted during the careers of police and public safety officers due to lack of research on their effectiveness and validity. While 44.3% of the participants in this survey had conducted at least one non-confidential mental health evaluation, only 25% appear to believe this type of psychological evaluation is appropriate in police/public safety agencies at this time. Overall, there was strong agreement for most items related to “wellness visits/resiliency reviews” but less agreement with issues surrounding “mental health evaluations.” These findings offer a starting point for the field to work toward consensus in developing guidelines for these services.
