Police Oracle - Subscription at source 24/2/2022 News Policing Is Not For Me: Repelling Factors Implicated in Vocational Choice Elimination Occupational choice involves both attracting and repelling forces. The changing nature of police work and public scrutiny surrounding officers’ participation in incidents involving racial bias and excessive force have resulted in shifting perceptions of the profession among the general public, serving as forces that move people away from the occupation. While much recent research focuses on motivating and attracting forces, it is equally important to address attributes that are implicated in keeping potential candidates from considering policing as a viable career choice, given rising rates of attrition and lack of new recruits. Utilising a sample of undergraduate criminal justice majors (N = 152), a logistic regression indicated gender, race/ethnicity, need for power, and meaningful work act as significant predictors for eliminating policing as a career choice. Analysis of qualitative responses further supports our results, as well as provides additional insight into participants’ decision to exclude policing as a career choice. Job attributes (e.g. dangerous conditions, bad hours), lack of fit, and poor occupational image were identified as key themes for vocational choice elimination. Findings have implications for the recruitment and retention of law enforcement personnel, as well as efforts to increase diversity within policing agencies. Policing and Society - Registration at source 24/2/2022 Research article ‘Real Men’ Doing Dirty Work: Implications For Change Police organisations in Canada and other parts of the world, have recently undertaken efforts to address misconduct arising from high-profile reports of internal discrimination and harassment and/or instances of excessive use of force. However, these actions tend to be pursued through traditional approaches without fully understanding the contextual factors that contribute to these harmful behaviours. Through a sequential, qualitative mixed-methods study involving Canadian police officers, this paper highlights how symbolic meanings attached to police work contribute to perceptions that the work is more suitable for some individuals than others. The findings also illustrate how officers respond to identity threats from stigmatised officers or from external sources. Finally, the findings suggest that the prototypical image of a police officer may be changing with recent criticisms of the police presented as possibilities for change. However, there is limited understanding of how these encounters vary with the presence of a female officer. The present study utilized data from three large, geographically diverse police agencies to evaluate situational, officer, and suspect characteristics of use-of-force incidents that are associated with the presence and involvement of a female officer. Analyses examining both multiple officer/suspect and single officer/suspect incidents indicate many situational similarities between incidents with at least one female officer present or involved and incidents with no female officers. However, the probability of female officer presence/involvement increases for incidents involving display of a taser, officer injuries, greater racial diversity among the officers, and female suspects. Additional findings and research implications are discussed.
