Police Federation of England and Wales (PFEW) 12/10/2022 News Fatal police encounters – it’s not just shootings One of the most critical issues in policing today is citizen deaths that occur as a result of police encounters. Most of the fatal police encounters research tends to focus on fatalities as a direct result of police actions such as fatal shootings. However, there are a wide variety of ways in which fatalities occur during police encounters that may not be due to direct police actions (for example accidents and suicide). This study examines both direct and indirect forms of fatal police encounters. To do this, a chi-squared analysis was conducted of 106 fatal police encounters that occurred across two Australian states. The findings reveal that over three-quarters of fatal police encounters within the data were a result of indirect police actions. These findings highlight the prominence of indirect fatal police encounters and, in turn, the greater opportunity to focus on prevention strategies for these often-neglected deaths in the research. Current Issues in Criminal Justice 12/10/2022 Research article Reforming psychosocial and mental health pathways for young people following initial encounters with police The June 2022 special themed edition of Criminal Behaviour & Mental Health recognised the importance of services for young people struggling to contain their own behaviour, even dangerous behaviour, that are commissioned from outside the criminal justice system. Important issues were raised, and valuable new research evidence published, but, inevitably, some areas were largely untouched. In particular, early intervention options at the point of first contact with the criminal justice system merit further exploration. Here, we outline the potential of police contacts with young people for initial, minor offending behaviour or crime victimisation happening in an alternative setting to police stations and/or police partnering with services commissioned outside criminal justice—for example, by health, social services, or education. We argue that this would enable more focused health and welfare responses that would better safeguard young people and their communities. The Journal (Republic of Ireland) 12/10/2022 News The Impact of Disguise on the Identification of Familiar Faces Two studies examined the impact of disguise on recognizing familiar faces. Participants viewed the faces of male celebrities and unfamiliar male faces seen disguised or undisguised. Familiar face recognition accuracy decreased significantly with an increase in the degree of disguise and concealment of facial features. In study 1, participants in the high disguise group (n = 75) viewed faces wearing dark, tight-fitting pantyhose that distorted facial features. Participants in the low disguise group (n = 78) viewed faces wearing a pantyhose more opaque and looser fitting, providing less concealment of the face. Recognition accuracy in the high disguise group was significantly lower (.27) than the low disguise group (.51). In study 2, participants (N = 252) viewed celebrity and unfamiliar faces wearing one of three disguises: (1) a hat, glasses, and fake mustache, (2) a ski mask, or (3) a pantyhose from the high disguise group in study 1. Recognition accuracy in the ski mask group was significantly lower (.21) than the hat, glasses, and fake mustache group (.44) and the high disguise pantyhose group (.29). When presented with disguised and undisguised control faces that were unfamiliar, participants in both studies were accurate at identifying them as unfamiliar. Lastly, the impact of disguise on familiar face recognition decreased significantly in both studies when controlled for, as was done above, whether a participant could identify a celebrity face when seen undisguised.
