This study examines how a pilot training course developed by the narcotics enforcement team of a large sheriff’s department in Southeast Texas impacts LEOs’ perceptions and attitudes toward opioid overdose-related topics. A pre-and-post-training comparison was conducted with 97 sworn officers, focusing on stigma-blame toward individuals with opioid use disorder, overdose prevention, police-led treatment referrals, and prioritization of tasks at overdose scenes. Results show that while training significantly improved LEOs’ prioritization of high-priority tasks at overdose scenes, it had little discernable effect on views concerning stigma-blame, overdose prevention, and treatment referrals. These findings highlight the need for targeted curriculum enhancements to better align law enforcement training with public health objectives. Journal of Crime and Justice 16/5/2025 Research article Police culture and body-worn cameras: examining how cultural values impact officers’ acceptance of technology The proliferation of body-worn cameras over the last decade has been accompanied by an abundance of research. Largely absent from such inquiries is the potential influence of cultural attitudes on support for body-worn cameras. Traditional aspects of the police culture may serve as barriers to acceptance of any emergent technology. Analyzing survey data from approximately 350 officers from an urban police department in the USA, this study reveals that some facets of police culture impact officers’ support for body-worn cameras. The findings have policy implications as police continuously adopt new technologies. Police leaders need ways to identify those officers who may be resistant and to mitigate concerns and promote trust in technology. Policing: A Journal of Policy and Practice - Subscription at source 16/5/2025 Research article Evidence-based evaluation in the EU counter-terrorism interventions: practitioners’ perspectives This article is an analysis of the evaluation practices of the EU counter-terrorism initiatives. It is grounded in the findings of a practitioners’ workshop under the INDEED project1 that aimed at determining the Evidence-Based Evaluation (EBE) opportunities, limitations, and significance in improving the effectiveness of counter-terrorism initiatives. The workshop’s main objectives included (a) establishing a baseline of core needs, gaps, and potential solutions defined by practitioners; and (b) enabling the development of the next generation of EBE practices. The article suggests that an improved understanding of the value of EBE, reduction in complexity, effective communication, timely utilization, and inclusivity (research, policy, and practice communities through meaningful and sustainable relationships) improves strategic programme implementation. The article further suggests that this approach to evaluation positions evaluation practices more clearly as research-informed, community-oriented, and practitioner-centered. Policing: A Journal of Policy and Practice 16/5/2025 Research article Assessing the effect of gender and diversity on the traditional police culture Women remain underrepresented in policing, and their effect on the traditional police culture remains understudied. The current study combines survey data from the Law Enforcement Management and Administrative Statistics (LEMAS) and National Police Platform to examine differences between the cultural attitudes of women and men, and whether larger proportions of women within law enforcement organizations affect the attitudes of men. We find that men and women officers differ onn attitudes related to traditional law enforcement orientations, coercive attitudes, solidarity, and perceived antipathy from the public, but not on cynicism. While we find evidence of nonlinear relationships between police solidarity among men and larger shares of women in their organizations, there is no evidence that their attitudes shift on other measures. We discuss the implications of disparate attitudes in men versus women police officers, as well as the limited effects of representation on the attitudes of men. Policing: A Journal of Policy and Practice 16/5/2025 Research article Exploring the influence of three scaffolded simulation-based learning approaches in preparing police recruits for policing mental health incidents Internationally, mental health-related crises represent a substantial proportion of emergency calls to police departments, police are the default first responders in most mental health crisis intervention models worldwide, resulting in a heavy burden on police, perceived criminalization of individuals with complex mental health needs, and escalation of aggression that resort to violence. The education and training program for New South Wales Police Force recruits has continuously evolved over the past two decades, with the aim to equip attesting officers with the knowledge and skills to manage policing persons with a mental health illness. Currently, the program delivers a combination of three scaffolded formats of simulation-based learning activities/scenarios for developing an understanding of the influence of police actions and the subsequent outcomes in policing mental health incidents. This article presents the findings of a study designed to understand the respective influence of the three formats of simulation-based learning on the development of confidence and competence for policing mental health incidents.
